Typical Tasks & Duties

As a Teaching Aide (Assistant) you would directly assist the Physical Education Teacher. This would include assisting with the conduct of recreation events or activities at Primary School Grades 3-4 level and undertake administration work related to the work environment at the institution. Each day would commence with students in a classroom environment (first two periods) then for the reminder of the day delivering Sport, Fitness and Recreation activities. The student will over the course of the day assist teaching staff by preparing classroom activities, setting up and packing up of games, conducting student warmups before activities and supervising students during games all under the guidance of the Physical Education Teacher in charge.

The student may undertake the following tasks;
• Organise and complete daily work activities.
• Provide first aid.
• Participate in workplace health and safety.
• Assist with activity sessions.
• Provide quality service.
• Respond to emergency situations.
• Work effectively in sport, fitness and recreation environments.
• Maintain sport, fitness and recreation industry knowledge.
• Provide equipment for activities.
• Maintain equipment for activities.
• Maintain sport, fitness and recreation facilities.
• Provide first point of contact.
• Use digital technology for routine workplace tasks.

Student Requirements

Students with a positive attitude towards Sport, Fitness and Recreation and in particular as an Physical Education Aide (Assistant) with a keen eye for detail and are self-motivated, willing to listen and follow instruction are encouraged to consider a future SWL placement to develop skills learned from their VETDSS subject.

Whilst the students is attending the work placement they are expected to:
• Dress appropriately.
• Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
• Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
• Be punctual.
• Follow management instructions.
• Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
• Work within the team.
• Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
• Respect other people’s belongings.
• Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
• Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
• Take their Log Book to the work placement every day.

Important Note: the student must adhere to strict confidentiality guidelines and be respectful at all times.

Dress Requirements

The student must be well presented and required to wear sport clothing as follows;
• Flat, non-slip, enclosed sport shoes as work shoes.
• Casual neat sport dress.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the tasks and duties carried out by the student, will be supplied by the Host Employer.

Special Transport Requirements

Public Transport is limited, students to check bus transport availability and or speak to parents/carer to organise transport prior to contacting employer.
