Skills You Might Learn
Students will consolidate skills learned in alignment with their VET Certificate Studies, including hands on skills and improved industry knowledge. This placement would suit students studying a Certificate in Building and Construction (Pre-Apprenticeship), Certificate in Furniture Making, Certificate in Carpentry or similar.
Transferable skills which are vital in this workplace include communication, teamwork, time management, customer service, using technology, critical thinking and problem solving.
Typical Tasks & Duties
Students will start with basic tasks including;
- observing occupational health and safety requirements within the construction industry
- correct care and storage of equipment and tools
- preparation and cleaning of work areas
After appropriate instruction and supervision, more skilled tasks may include;
- Using basic hand and power tools
- Working safely in the construction industry
- Reading and interpreting plans and specifications
- Installing fixtures and fittings
- Performing basic carpentry tasks
- Other tasks as instructed by their supervisor as appropriate to the workplace and / or in alignment with their VET studies.
Student may also have the opportunity to observe other aspects of the building industry, including tiling, plastering and larger constructions / installations as part of the client builds.
Student Requirements
This employer is seeking students with a committed and positive attitude and work ethic. Student should be punctual and motivated, and be able to manage themselves well. This placement is best suited to students studying Cert III Carpentry, Cert II Building and Construction (Pre-Apprenticeship), Cert II in Furniture Making or similar.
Student should also demonstrate good self-management. During quiet times at the workshop it is expected that student will be prepared to complete workplace learning record, or other similar tasks related to their overall study and skill development.
Dress Requirements
Suitable workplace attire includes;
- Work boots / safety boots
- Long pants
- No loose clothing or jewellery for safety reasons
- Long hair to be tied back
- Warm clothing is recommended in winter
Special Transport Requirements
Venue is close to bus routes with links to the Hurstbridge train line. Bus routes service Waterdale Rd and LaTrobe University.
Travel Form will be required as student may travel to different locations for installations.
