Skills You Might Learn
Potential Skills Attained Aligned with Community Services studies, students may have the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills including;
- Working with a diverse range of people
- Being an effective volunteer
- Identifying and responding to client needs
- Following safe work practices relating to client care
Similarly, Health Assistance students may also develop skills in;
- Assisting with movement
- Complying with infection prevention and control
- Recognising and responding appropriately to behaviours of concern
- etc.
Work Related Skills, such as Workplace Health and Safety, teamwork, communication, time management, critical and creative thinking, are vital in this workplace.
Typical Tasks & Duties
Placement students will assist with a range of activities to support people with disability. These activities may be onsite or in the wider community. Activities are likely to include;
- assisting at the on-site café at Melbourne Polytechnic,
- assisting with Literacy and Numeracy (with individuals as part of a group environment)
- Supporting community participation such as shopping and travel skills
Student Requirements
This placement is best suited to VCE or VCAL students undertaking VET studies in Health, Community Services or Individual Support. The employer is looking for friendly, open and supportive students.
Placement students will be expected to comply with Araluen’s confidentiality and discretion policies at all times, especially when working with and discussing the clients’ needs and program participation.
Dress Requirements
Neat casual, closed toe shoes. To be discussed further at interview.
Special Transport Requirements
Venue is close to bus access, with links to trains on the Hurstbridge line.
Travel Form will be required to enable student to move between sites and participate in community based activities.
