This is a fantastic opportunity for someone completing the certificate II in Building & Construction to enter the construction industry. Dave Berry Tiles has over 30 years local experience in the Tiling industry.

Dave and his team have experience in all aspects of commercial & domestic tiling including floor and wall tiling and working with ceramic, clay, slate, marble, glass and other types of tiles on external and internal walls and floors to provide protective and decorative finishes. Skills You Might Learn

In this placement students will experience learning how to make calculations for tiling, levelling, safe handling of tiling products, safe handling of portable and selected power tools, tiling substrates and tiling adhesives for floor and wall tiling, and communication skills needed in the construction industry. Possible customer contact in the Tiles showroom.

Typical Tasks & Duties

The student will support qualified tilers with some of the following tasks - looking at plans, measure and mark surfaces to be covered and lay out work; prepare wall and floor surfaces by removing old tiles, grout cement and adhesive; use tile cutting tools to cut and shape tiles needed for edges ,corners, or around obstacles such as fittings or pipes; attach tiles to surfaces, using correct adhesive, making sure that patterned tiles match; space and even the tiles by using tools such as split levels and plumb lines; prepare and apply grout, remove excess grout, clean and polish tiles; apply waterproofing systems, packing and unpacking tiling equipment, cleaning and customer service.

Student Requirements

Prior to the interview with the host employer, students are required to review the Facebook page and learn some background about Dave Berry Tiling.
Whilst the students are attending a work placement they are expected to:
Dress appropriately
Maintain interest and participate in work duties
Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner
Be punctual
Follow management instructions
Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements
Work within the team
Listen and take advice from fellow workers
Participate in business activities as required
Respect other people’s belongings
Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference
Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course
Take their Log Book to the work placement every day
Carry a Victorian Construction Induction Card (White Card), please note: obtaining the White Card is required prior to attending the work placement.

Dress Requirements

Clothes suitable for both the tiling industry and meeting customers. Neat tidy work wear and safety boots.

Special Transport Requirements

Student to arrange own transport to and from work.

Public Transport is limited, students to check bus transport availability and or speak to parents/carer to organise transport prior to contacting employer.
