Work Experience - The Gippsland region has a number of dairy farm businesses who are keen to offer students an opportunity to learn about working as a dairy farmer and share the endless possibilities about a rewarding career in agriculture.
With 43,000 people directly employed in dairy farming, the dairy industry is a vital contributor to regional Australia, providing jobs, supporting local communities and producing some of the best, most nutritious and wholesome milk and dairy products in the world. The Gippsland region produces 21% of Australia’s milk – a massive 1.987 billion litres.

Skills You Might Learn

The student will gain an understanding of working within an operational farm. Students can expect to learn basic skills in farming techniques such as pasture & livestock management, milk harvesting and farm maintenance. Students will learn about the importance of communication, working safely in a farm environment and being an effective team member.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Students could be involved in milking, assisting with feeding cows and calves, care for health and welfare of livestock, moving and drafting livestock and other general farm tasks such as fencing, weed and pest control and farm maintenance.

Student Requirements

Students must have a curious and enthusiastic attitude to work. Students need to be able to enjoy outdoor practical work and be comfortable working with farm animals.

Dress Requirements

Students will need to wear long pants and shirts, work boots and sometimes gumboots. Wet weather gear will be needed in wetter months. A hat is essential for working outdoors.

Special Transport Requirements

Students will need to find their own way to the workplace
