Russell provides a wide range of landscaping services, from basic pruning to complete landscape design and construction. Russell can help a student develop skills in using and maintaining equipment and assist in learning more about landscaping design and construction. Students should not hesitate in following this up with their careers teachers if at all interested in furthering their career in agriculture and landscaping. Please note: this opportunity is available for limited periods and seasons throughout the year. Placement periods must be negotiated with the employer at a pre placement interview.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Students may undertake tasks and typical duties only if they are completing a relevant VET qualification and the structured workplace learning will allow them to obtain or further develop the skills and knowledge outlined in a relevant unit of competency within the qualification.
Students may assist or observe trained staff with the following activities:
- Tasks will be around assisting Russell and team members in their roles.
- Preparing site for landscaping construction and basic labouring duties.
- Assisting trained staff with related landscaping activities.
- Engaging with customers related to landscaping activities as advised by trained staff.
- Completing all related tasks as assigned by trained staff.
- Hands on learning through duties that require manual labour.
- Students will work as part of a team on a variety of work sites, specifically, using tools and landscaping equipment will be a big part of a student's working day (equipment and tools described in the performance criteria or assessment requirements of a unit of competency).

Student Requirements

Students are permitted to learn how to use plant or equipment only if they are explicitly required in the performance criteria or assessment requirements of a unit of competency the student is undertaking as part of a VET qualification.
The following requirements must be met;
- Students must have completed the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) module in Work Related Skills or the OH&S module in the relevant VET course.
- Students are required to have a keen interest in gardening and landscaping.
- Students must have good vision and be physically able to work with hand tools and machines.
- Students must enjoy practical and manual work and be able to bend and lift using safe manual handling techniques.
- Students must have a willingness to learn and be able to follow instructions.
- Students must be willing to communicate clearly and work with a team. This includes notifying the supervisor of any planned or unplanned absence from placement.
- Students must be completing a related subject or have displayed an interest in the area of gardening and landscaping services.
- Students are to complete any applicable relevant course work and/or Workplace Learning Record entries as outlined in the SWL Arrangement.
- Personal mobile phones are not required during work hours. Mobile phones or devices are only to be used during meal breaks and out of work hours.

Dress Requirements

Students are to wear working clothes plus high visibility gear appropriate for the work place as well as sturdy work boots. Long hair must be tied up and a broad brimmed hat worn during the warmer months.

Special Transport Requirements

The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) is responsible for the student’s transport to and from the workplace. If it is proposed that the student may need to undertake vehicle travel with their employer and/or supervisor during the arrangement (including transporting the student to and/or from the workplace), the employer must complete the Structured Workplace Learning Travel and Accommodation Form. The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) must give their consent by also completing this form.
