Typical Tasks & Duties

As an Automotive Serviceperson you will assist in performing routine servicing, work on engines, braking, cooling, steering, suspension, driveline and final drive systems as well as batteries. You may also assist in undertaking the inspection and service of transmissions, fuel and emission control systems and batteries.

The student may undertake the following tasks and duties;
• Follow environmental and sustainability best practice in an automotive workplace.
• Follow safe working practices in an automotive workplace.
• Identify basic automotive faults using troubleshooting processes.
• Inspect, test and service batteries.
• Carry out servicing operations.
• Inspect and service braking systems.
• Inspect and service cooling systems.
• Inspect and service steering systems.
• Inspect and service suspension systems.
• Inspect and service engines.
• Use and maintain tools and equipment in an automotive workplace.
• Inspect and service final drive assemblies.
• Inspect and service drive shafts.
• Respond to customer needs and enquiries in an automotive workplace.
• Inspect and service automatic transmissions.
• Inspect and service emission control systems.
• Inspect and service petrol fuel systems.
• Test, charge and replace batteries and jump-start vehicles.

Student Requirements

Students with a positive attitude towards Automotive Retail, Service and Repair Industry and in particular Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology (Mechanic) with a keen eye for detail and are self-motivated, willing to listen and follow instruction are encouraged to consider a future SWL placement to develop skills learned from their VETDSS subject in Automotive Studies.

Whilst the students is attending the work placement they are expected to:
• Dress appropriately.
• Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
• Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
• Be punctual.
• Follow management instructions.
• Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
• Work within the team.
• Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
• Respect other people’s belongings.
• Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
• Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
• Take their Log Book to the work placement every day.

Dress Requirements

The student will be required to present in the following work attire;
• Work pants/overalls.
• Work shirt.
• Work boots (steel capped).

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the tasks and duties carried out by the student, will be supplied by the Host Employer.

Special Transport Requirements

Public Transport is limited, students to check public transport availability and or speak to parents/carer to organise transport prior to contacting employer.
