Typical Tasks & Duties

The student will gain hands-on experience alongside qualified refrigeration and air conditioning tradespeople and be introduced to the day-to-day work of the trade. The student will observe and assist with a range of trade-related activities associated with the installation, servicing and maintenance of refrigeration and air conditioning systems, under the direction and supervision of qualified tradespeople.

The student may undertake the following tasks and duties:
- Follow OHS requirements, policies and procedures.
- Use appropriate hand tools, assembly tools and equipment under supervision.
- Use personal protective equipment as required.
- Follow safe work practices and procedures.
- Identify workplace hazards and appropriate control measures.
- Read and interpret routine information from job instructions.
- Select and prepare appropriate tools, equipment and materials for jobs.
- Assist qualified tradespeople with the installation of commercial and residential refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
- Observe testing, checking and fault-finding activities undertaken by qualified tradespeople.
- Assist with the assembly and fabrication of appropriate components as directed.
- Learn to identify common refrigeration, air conditioning, electrical and electronic components and their purpose within a system.
- Observe the installation and connection of electrical and electronic components and control systems by qualified tradespeople.
- Assist with measuring, preparing, positioning and securing components and materials used in refrigeration and air conditioning installations.
- Follow written and verbal job instructions.
- Assist with identifying components that may require inspection, repair or replacement.
- Enter routine information onto standard workplace forms as directed.
- Assist with preparing work areas and maintaining a clean and tidy work environment.
- Assist with packing up tools, equipment and materials at the completion of work.

Student Requirements

Students with a positive attitude towards Refrigeration Mechanical who are self-motivated, willing to listen and follow instruction are encouraged to consider a future SWL placement to develop skills learned from their VET subject relating to Electrotechnology.

Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
• Students must be interested in Refrigeration Mechanical and possess good communication skills.
• Students must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
• Dress appropriately.
• Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
• Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
• Be punctual.
• Follow management instructions.
• Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
• Work within the team.
• Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
• Respect other people’s belongings.
• Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
• Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
• Take their Logbook to the work placement every day.

Student Responsibility to;
Carry a Victorian Construction Induction Card (White Card), please note: obtaining the White Card is required prior to attending the work placement.

Dress Requirements

The student will be required to present at work in the following work attire;
• Work pants or work shorts.
• Hi visual shirt, long sleeve.
• Steel capped work boots.
• Wide brim hat.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the tasks and duties carried out by the student, will be supplied by the Host Employer.

Special Transport Requirements

Public Transport is limited, students to check bus transport availability and or speak to parents/carer to organise transport prior to contacting employer.
