This placement is in the kitchen at SHDH. Students will have the chance of hands-on practical experience in a large, busy commercial kitchen environment. As well they will be observing and learning from qualified and experienced professionals. Swan Hill District Health is very supportive of the SWL program and staff are friendly. Students will be operating in a modern and well equipped workplace. This is a great opportunity to learn about working life in a facility where the food is driven by dieticians. Also, while producing bulk food, the kitchen is a complex place to operate due to the specific requirements of patients. If interested talk to your careers teacher as they are familiar with the application process. Good luck.

Skills You Might Learn

The use of basic food preparation techniques and equipment will be a focus. For example, preparing ingredients for mains, salads and sweets. As well students will learn workplace communication in real life food preparation scenarios. They will also assist with the maintenance and cleaning of kitchen facilities.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Tasks will be around assisting other employees in their roles and the student will be expected to be an active participant in all workplace practices. They will work as part of a team while under regular supervision. Bulk food is the focus in the SHDH kitchen and this will dictate the typical tasks and experiences with this placement.

Student Requirements

The students must have completed the OH&S module in WRS VM or else have begun the OH&S module in the relevant VET course.

Dress Requirements

Students are to wear neat casual dress appropriate for the work place. Closed top shoes are required.

Special Transport Requirements

Students may need to organise their own transport to work but there is a bus service in Swan Hill.
