Are you interested in design of signage, prints and apparel? Laser Signs and Prints have a Structured Workplace Learning Opportunity (SWL Opportunity) as Retail and Creative Arts Trades Assistant in the Signwriting and Printing Industry.

The SWL Opportunity is ideally suited to a VCE-VM, VPC or VCE student studying VDSS in Retail or Creative Industries as part of their study program.

You will be working with staff who are responsible for the physical productions of signs needed by customers. They create custom shaped illuminated signs, laser etching and uniforms designs, print graphics on banners or paint on timber and other materials, depending on the finish required. See and work with the production of these products.

Typical Tasks & Duties

As a Retail and Creative Arts Trades Assistant in the Signwriting and Printing Industry, the student will learn to focus on understanding customer’s needs. In the creative design industry of manufacturing you will need to provide work good customer service, operating point-of-sale equipment as well as stock operations assisting the production of products. You would also be responsible for ensuring the workshop and store is kept orderly and clean, and that goods are secured properly displayed and stored. Will require focusing and learning product knowledge and potential to create displays or present merchandise.

Tasks and duties may include but are not limited to;

• Receive and handle retail stock.

Student Requirements

Students with a positive attitude towards customer service with a creative mind set who are self-motivated, willing to listen and follow instruction are encouraged to consider a future SWL Opportunity placement to develop skills learned from their VDSS subject in Retail or Creative Arts.

Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
• Students must be interested in creative design, be sociable with good communication skills.
• Students must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
• Dress appropriately.
• Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
• Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
• Be punctual.
• Follow management instructions.
• Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
• Work within the team.
• Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
• Respect other people’s belongings.
• Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
• Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
• Take their Log Book to the work placement every day.

Dress Requirements

The student must be well presented, clean and hygienic at all times.
• Neat professional business attire is required.
• Flat, non-slip, enclosed work shoes.
• Please do not wear clothing which others may find offensive.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the tasks and duties carried out by the student, will be supplied by the Host Employer.

Special Transport Requirements

Public Transport is limited, students to check bus transport availability and or speak to parents/carer to organise transport prior to contacting employer.
