This locally owned and operated business is based in Stawell, with a highly skilled team that are available to travel across the Grampians and Wimmera region to meet the needs of customers. As a student on placement, you will learn a broad variety of everything the highly skilled team have to offer in the profession of an arborist. Typical Tasks & Duties

Students are permitted to learn how to use plant or equipment only if they are explicitly required in the performance criteria or assessment requirements of a unit of competency the student is undertaking as part of a VET qualification. Students may assist or observe trained staff with the following activities:
- Gardening and maintenance as directed and supervised by the workplace supervisor.
- Weed control and disposal of all waste from job sites.
- Garden establishment and preparation of landscaping design.
- Pruning and observation of stump removal.
- Removal of dead wood and disposal of job site waste.

Student Requirements

Students are encouraged to consider a SWL placement to develop skills learned from their VET certificate in Agriculture (Horticulture) and/or Landscaping.
The following requirements must be met;
- Students must have completed the OH&S module in their VET course, along with a completed White Card (Construction Induction Card).
- Work will be physical and outside and students must remain at ground level and take no risks when power equipment and/or machines are in operation.
- Students must not use plant or equipment that pose an unacceptable risk to their health or safety, or which require extensive training or experience to use safely.
- Students are required to have a keen interest in horticulture and tree removal services.
- Students must have a willingness to learn and be able to follow instructions carefully and competently.
- Students must be willing to communicate clearly and work with a team. This includes notifying the workplace supervisor and the careers teacher of any planned or unplanned absence.
- Students must be completing a related subject or have displayed an interest in the area of Agriculture (Horticulture) and/or Construction (Landscaping).
- Personal mobile phones are not required and should only be used out of work hours or on meal breaks.

Dress Requirements

Please discuss with the employer at the preplacement interview. Protective, industrial Clothing including safety boots will be required. A broadbrimmed hat and sunscreen will be required during the warmer months. Appropriate PPE must be worn in accordance with OH&S policy and work procedures.

Special Transport Requirements

The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) is responsible for the student’s transport to and from the workplace. If it is proposed that the student may need to undertake vehicle travel with their employer and/or supervisor during the arrangement (including transporting the student to and/or from the workplace), the employer must complete the Structured Workplace Learning Travel and Accommodation Form. The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) must give their consent by also completing this form.
