Skills You Might Learn

The student will learn to accurately measure areas to be carpeted and document them. Create estimates for materials and cost to customers. Ensure that the area is clean and swept. Ensure that the grain of all pieces of carpet lay correctly. Install carpet padding, install tack strips, lay carpeting, measure and cut carpet padding.

Typical Tasks & Duties

The student will be expected to assist with laying floor coverings in buildings, offices, homes, restaurants and businesses. Measure rooms and draw up specifications for carpet laying. Remove and dispose of old flooring. Lay out samples for selection, install the padded cushion, roll out, measure, mark, and cut the carpet, position the carpet and stretch it to fit, cut off excess carpet and frays. Use power stretcher to stretch carpet to fit walls, finish edges with wall trimmer and join carpet sections together for large rooms.

Student Requirements

The student must have an interest in carpet laying and have an ability to carry heavy loads, follow directions, use tools, have accurate math skills, critical thinking skills, good communication skills and physically being able to spend a lot of time on knees. The student must be punctual, willing to listen and learn, follow all worksite OHS.

Dress Requirements

Work pants and steel capped boots. Warm jacket for cold days.

Special Transport Requirements

The employer lives in Roxburgh Park. He is will to pick up the student at a meeting point in Roxburgh Park and drop off the student at an agreed point.
