Skills You Might Learn

Apart from skills aligned with VET (described above) students will also gain understanding of transferrable skills, including the importance of clear communication, planning and problem solving, time management, teamwork and risk assessment.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Successful candidates will start with basic tasks aligned with their VET Construction or Engineering studies, with a strong focus on Workplace Health and Safety. As their skill level grows, the student will be exposed to more complex tasks. Duties may include planning and preparation of raw materials, safe operations of various cutting and assembly equipment, shaping and cleaning surfaces, performing various tests to ensure quality and integrity, etc.

Student Requirements

Placement best suited to students currently undertaking VET Construction or Engineering studies who are interested in learning more about steel fabrication. This is a “physical” role, so a certain level of strength and dexterity is vital.

Initial placement is for 10 days. Further placement opportunities (SWL or SBAT) to be discussed between employer and student at the end of initial placement. Employer is looking to build their team, so opportunity for further placement will depend on the student's level of interest in the industry and their fit with the overall team.

Dress Requirements

Steel capped boots, long pants and long sleeves to be worn at all times. Additional PPE (High Visibitility, goggles, etc.) will be provided in need. To be discussed at interview.

Special Transport Requirements

Venue is close to bus access.
Travel Form may be required to enable student to move between sites.
