About Stawell Neighbourhood House: Stawell Neighbourhood House is a vibrant community hub located at the Powerhouse that fosters social and meaningful engagement for residents of all ages and abilities. The House provides a safe, inclusive environment offering everything from recreational crafts and playgroups to vocational training and essential food relief services.
The Role: This placement offers a hands-on introduction to the daily operations of a busy community centre. Students will work alongside staff and volunteers to support the delivery of local programs that empower and connect the Stawell community.
Skills You Might Learn
- Interpersonal Communication: Experience interacting with a diverse range of community members, including families, seniors and people with disabilities.
- Logistics & Coordination: Learning how to manage community resources and schedule activities effectively.
- Active Listening: Developing the ability to understand community needs and direct people to appropriate services or programs.
- Teamwork: Working within a small, dedicated team of part-time staff and volunteers to achieve community goals.
Typical Tasks & Duties
- Program Support: Assist with the physical setup and pack-down of various daily activities, such as craft groups, playgroups and educational workshops.
- Food Relief Coordination: Help manage the Food Connect/Second Bite program. This includes organising food storage areas, assisting with fridge setup and coordinating with community members during food drop-offs and collections.
- Client Interaction: Act as a welcoming first point of contact for community members dropping in for assistance, programs or a chat.
- General Operations: Provide administrative or logistical support to ensure the House remains an organised and inviting space for all visitors.
Student Requirements
Students are encouraged to consider a WE placement to develop skills learned from their school subject.
The following requirements must be met;
-Passion for Community: A genuine interest in helping people and supporting local initiatives.
- Professionalism: Punctuality and a respectful attitude toward all community members.
- Students are required to have completed the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) modules- General module and any applicable industry OH&S modules.
- Students must maintain a diary or logbook and/or complete work experience assignment and other tasks that have been set by the school.
- Students must adhere to strict Privacy and Confidentiality policy and procedures.
- Students must have a willingness to learn and be able to follow instructions carefully and competently.
- Students must be willing to communicate clearly and work as a productive team member.
- Personal mobile phones are not required and should only be used out of work hours or on offsite meal breaks.
Dress Requirements
Students undertaking a placement with Stawell Neighbourhood House will be required to wear neat casual clothing as appropriate for an office space. Please discuss further with the workplace supervisor at the pre placement interview.
Special Transport Requirements
The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) is responsible for the student’s transport to and from the workplace. If it is proposed that the student may need to undertake vehicle travel with their employer and/or supervisor during the arrangement (including transporting the student to and/or from the workplace), the employer must complete the Work Experience Travel and Accommodation Form. The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) must give their consent by also completing this form.
