This work experience placement provides students with an introduction to the agriculture industry and the daily operations of a working farm. Students will observe and assist with a range of basic farm activities, gaining insight into crop production, livestock care, farm machinery, and sustainable farming practices. The placement is designed to help students understand how agricultural businesses operate and the important role agriculture plays in food production and environmental management.

Typical Tasks & Duties
Students may assist with and observe a variety of tasks depending on the season and farm activities at the time. Typical duties may include:
Assisting with feeding and basic care of livestock
Helping with planting, watering, or harvesting crops
General farm maintenance such as cleaning equipment or work areas
Assisting with fencing repairs or property upkeep
Sorting or packing produce
Observing the safe operation of tractors or other farm machinery (operation by students is usually not permitted)
Supporting staff with simple manual tasks around sheds, paddocks, or gardens
Students will primarily be learning through observation and supervised participation.
Student Requirements
Students participating in this placement should:
Be willing to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
Follow all safety instructions and workplace rules
Show interest in agriculture, animals, or environmental work
Be reliable, punctual, and respectful
Be comfortable around farm animals (if livestock are present)
No prior farming experience is required.
Dress Requirements
Students should wear practical clothing suitable for farm work:
Long pants (e.g., jeans or work pants)
Closed-toe sturdy shoes or work boots
Long-sleeve shirt recommended for sun protection
Hat and sunscreen for outdoor work
Waterproof jacket if rain is expected
Clothing should be comfortable and suitable for getting dirty.
Special Transport Requirements
Many farms are located in rural areas where public transport may be limited. Students may need:
A lift from a parent/guardian, or arranged transport
Students should confirm transport arrangements before the placement begins.
