Remembrance Parks Central Victoria creates and maintains beautiful remembrance parks across 11 locations in Central Victoria. Their mission is to preserve these spaces as peaceful, respectful and welcoming environments where visitors can pay their respects surrounded by thoughtfully designed and comforting landscapes.

This placement is a valuable opportunity for students with an interest in horticulture, gardening or landscaping to gain insight into the day-to-day operations of a remembrance park and the role that landscape design and maintenance play in supporting visitors and families.

Throughout the placement, students will learn about the importance of maintaining a respectful and well-presented physical environment. They may gain practical experience in gardening, landscaping, plant selection, site presentation and the design of outdoor spaces created for reflection, comfort and accessibility.

Note: Students will be supervised at all times and will not participate in activities that are hazardous, require specialised qualifications, or involve direct responsibility for memorial services, burials, cremations or sensitive customer matters.

Skills You Might Learn

Whilst on placement, students may gain industry-specific skills including:
• An introduction to gardening and horticulture
• An introduction to garden and landscape design principles
• Understanding how different environments influence plant and material selection
• Selecting and using appropriate materials, tools and equipment under supervision
• Understanding the importance of designing, maintaining and presenting landscapes that are respectful, welcoming and suited to their purpose.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Whilst on placement, students may have the opportunity to assist staff with the following tasks:
• Assisting with basic gardening and landscaping tasks under supervision
• Supporting general maintenance and housekeeping activities
• Helping prepare work areas, plants, materials and equipment
• Assisting with the design and presentation of tailored garden and landscape areas
• Undertaking general maintenance and cleaning duties as directed

Student Requirements

Students must have a genuine interest in horticulture, gardening or landscaping and be willing to work outdoors in a respectful community environment. If students have a particular area of interest, they should discuss this with their supervisor.
Mobile phones must not be used during placement and may only be used during scheduled breaks or lunch.

Dress Requirements

Students must wear appropriate clothing for outdoor gardening and landscaping work, such as a long-sleeved top, long pants, a hat during warmer months, and safety boots or equivalent enclosed footwear.

Public transport is available (within walking distance).
