This is an opportunity for a local student to work within a well established local cafe. The placement will initially be offered for 1 day per week over a 4 week period with the opportunity to extend or convert to a school based apprenticeship for the right student. The student will gain exposure to all aspects of the business and work alongside the owner. The focus of this workplace learning opportunity will be learning barista techniques, and the finer art of making an awesome coffee!

Skills You Might Learn

Many people think that making a good cup of coffee is simple. It's not, and it takes a lot of learning and practice to get it right.

Students undertaking this placement will learn alongside the owner a variety of barista skills:

- The history of coffee
- Preparing a range of espresso coffees
- Texturing milk correctly and to the right temperature
- Coffee machine operation
- How to make each coffee on the menu
- Coffee presentation
- Using & setting the coffee grinder
- Cleaning & maintenance of equipment

Students will also learn workplace communication skills, OH&S, food hygiene, food storage, food and beverage service and general employability skills.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Students will gain exposure to a vast range of duties working at the front house. Duties will include, but not be limited to:

- Barista duties: making coffee, tea, hot chocolate, cleaning down the machine, grinding coffee correctly, frothing milk correctly.
- Waitressing and serving beverages
- Front of house, meeting and servicing customers
- General cleaning and stocktake duties

Student Requirements

Students should have an interest in the hospitality sector and a willingness to learn. Students must be punctual and have good communication skills

Dress Requirements

Students must wear closed-in, non-slip shoes, long black pants and a black or white shirt.
