Typical Tasks & Duties
The student will assist and observe qualified tradesmen in all aspects of refrigeration and air conditioning plumbing.
The student may undertake the following tasks and duties;
• Following workplace OHS requirements, policies and procedures at all times.
• Using personal protective equipment (PPE) and observing safe work practices.
• Assisting senior team members with mechanical plumbing tasks associated with HVAC systems.
• Observing and assisting with the installation of pipework used in air-conditioning and refrigeration systems, including copper pipe and condensate drains.
• Assisting with cutting, measuring and preparing copper pipe and fittings under supervision.
• Assisting with gluing and assembling PVC pipework used for drainage systems.
• Assisting with measuring and marking pipe runs and components.
• Supporting senior team members with basic installation preparation tasks, such as carrying materials and preparing work areas.
• Assisting with minor excavation or trenching tasks where pipework is installed (where safe and appropriate).
• Observing system testing and commissioning processes undertaken by qualified technicians.
• Reading and following basic job instructions and site directions.
• Identifying and selecting appropriate tools and materials with guidance.
• Using basic hand tools safely and appropriately under supervision.
• Assisting with hazard identification and safe work practices on site.
• Completing basic workplace forms or documentation if required.
• Assisting with maintaining a clean, safe and organised work environment.
Student Requirements
Students with a positive attitude towards Plumbing who are self-motivated, willing to listen and follow instruction are encouraged to consider a future SWL placement to develop skills learned from their VET subject relating to Plumbing.
Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
• Students must be interested in the Plumbing and possess good communication skills.
• Students must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
• Dress appropriately.
• Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
• Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
• Be punctual.
• Follow management instructions.
• Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
• Work within the team.
• Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
• Respect other people’s belongings.
• Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
• Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
• Take their Logbook to the work placement every day.
Student Responsibility to;
Carry a Victorian Construction Induction Card (White Card), please note: obtaining the White Card is required prior to attending the work placement.
Dress Requirements
The student will be required to present at work in the following work attire;
• Work pants or work shorts.
• Hi visual shirt, long sleeve.
• Steel capped work boots.
• Wide brim hat.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the tasks and duties carried out by the student, will be supplied by the Host Employer.
Special Transport Requirements
Public Transport is limited, students to check bus transport availability and or speak to parents/carer to organise transport prior to contacting employer.
