Ricksteel Fabrications Pty Ltd is a family run business that has been in operation for over 30 years. The large workshop is equipped with industrial machinery to produce quality steel structures and products for big and small projects. Ricksteel also is equipped with specialised pressing, punching and shearing equipment to fabricate steel products. Ricksteel services the Central Grampians region and is involved in the design, fabrication and construction of a variety of steel applications, from the hand rails and toilet blocks in the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park to local school buildings framing and supports. Owner operators, Jeff and Annmarie Rickard and their highly qualified team have a placement opportunity available for a student who has a genuine interest in steel designs, fabrication and the manufacture of steel structures. Typical Tasks & Duties

Students are permitted to learn how to use plant or equipment only if they are explicitly required in the performance criteria or assessment requirements of a unit of competency the student is undertaking as part of a VET qualification.
Students may assist or observe trained staff with the following activities:
- Assisting Ricksteel trained staff with related steel manufacturing and engineering activities.
- Engaging with customers related to manufacturing and engineering activities as advised by Ricksteel trained staff.
- Completing all related cleaning and maintenance tasks as assigned by assisting Ricksteel trained staff.

Student Requirements

Students are encouraged to consider a SWL placement to develop skills learned from their Industry and Enterprise subject and/or a VET course in Building and Construction. Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
- Students must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
- Dress appropriately and wear Personal Protective Equipment as part of certain work tasks and duties.
- Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
- Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
- Be punctual and notify the workplace supervisor and careers teacher of any planned or unplanned absence from placement. Please discuss extension of placement dates if there are nominal hours to be completed as part of the VET course.
- Follow management instructions carefully and competently.
- Have good communication skills and display a friendly customer service manner.
- Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) requirements and have completed OH&S modules as part of their VET course or school subject.
- Work as a productive team member and have skills in effective communication.
- Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
- Respect other people’s belongings.
- Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
- Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course or school subject.
- Take their Workplace Learning Record and/or take course assessment tasks to the work placement every day.

Dress Requirements

Please discuss with the employer at the preplacement interview. Protective, industrial Clothing including safety boots will be required. A hat and sunscreen are essential for working outdoors. Appropriate PPE must be worn in accordance with WHS policy and work procedures.

Special Transport Requirements

The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) is responsible for the student’s transport to and from the workplace. If it is proposed that the student may need to undertake vehicle travel with their employer and/or supervisor during the arrangement (including transporting the student to and/or from the workplace), the employer must complete the Structured Workplace Learning Travel and Accommodation Form. The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) must give their consent by also completing this form.
