The Room Hair and Design is a family owned and operated hair and beauty business. Owner Verity is very passionate about the health and care of hair and prides herself on the very best of customer service. This SWL placement will introduce students to a broad range of hair treatments, haircuts, styling and application and care of salon colours. Students will also learn the basics of the therapeutic practices involved in professional hair shampooing and conditioning to allow clients to relax and unwind. Based in Ararat's busy main street, The Room Hair and Design has an opportunity for a Salon Assistant student to build on their skills and apply course theory to practical placement in a vibrant and creative industry. Typical Tasks & Duties

During your placement, you may undertake the following:
- All aspects of customer service, observing and taking part in treatments dependent on level of competency.
- Greet and seat clients.
- Prepare clients for salon services.
- Offer clients tea/coffee and converse in a friendly, customer service manner.
- General cleaning, sweeping and set up and pack away tasks.
- Prepare equipment and products.
- Prepare treatments and apply skills of shampooing and conditioning hair.
- Learn to answer phone and book appointments

Student Requirements

Students are encouraged to consider a SWL placement to develop skills learned from their VET course in Salon Assistant.
Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
- Students must be interested in the Salon Assistant or Beauty vocation as part of the Retail and Personal Services industry.
- Students must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
- Dress appropriately and wear Personal Protective Equipment as part of certain work tasks and duties.
- Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
- Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
- Be punctual and notify the workplace supervisor and careers teacher of any planned or unplanned absence from placement.
- Follow management instructions carefully and competently.
- Have good communication skills and display a friendly customer service manner.
- Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) requirements and have completed OH&S modules as part of their course or school subject.
- Work as a productive team member and have skills in effective communication.
- Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
- Respect other people’s belongings.
- Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
- Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course or school subject.
- Take their Workplace Learning Record and/or have course assessment tasks to complete at work placement every day.
- Personal mobile phones are not required and should only be used out of work hours or on meal breaks.

Dress Requirements

Dress requirements will be discussed with the successful student prior to commencement.

The student will be required to arrange their own transport; if transport is presenting a problem, please contact CGLLEN to discuss available options and support that can be provided. If it is proposed that the student may need to undertake vehicle travel with their employer and/or supervisor during the arrangement (including transporting the student to and/or from the workplace), the employer must complete the Structured Workplace Learning Travel and Accommodation Form. The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) must give their consent by also completing this form.
