The Ararat Advocate is looking for students that can apply their design, printing and marketing skills. The student will actively engage in administration duties, answering phone calls, work with relevant software and gain further understanding how digital and printed versions of newspapers are created. For more advanced students, other tasks may involve design layout, copy editing, image conversion or helping to update website and social media posts. This placement is for VET and/or Industry and Enterprise students pursuing certificates in Business Administration, Creative Industries, Screen & Media or Visual Arts and have a genuine interest to learn how to achieve the highest-quality publishing services. Skills You Might Learn

Aligned with VET studies, students may have the opportunity to develop their skills in;
- Design and layout.
- Operating applicable software packages.
- Developing design skills with a variety of techniques (eg. hard copy and online publications).
- Creative writing and graphic design processes and procedures.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Placement students will have the opportunity to participate in range of activities, starting with basic tasks including;
- OH&S processes.
- Answering phone calls.
- Updating data entry.
- Researching.
- Developing design skills.
- Learning relevant software skills.
- Creative writing and reporting skills.
Depending upon student development, students may progress to higher level tasks including;
- Design layout.
- Updating website and social media posts.
- Copyediting.
- Proofreading.
- Image conversion.
- Engaging with community members, clients, and networking with pre press designers as instructed by trained staff.

Student Requirements

Students are permitted to learn how to use plant or equipment only if they are explicitly required in the performance criteria or assessment requirements of a unit of competency the student is undertaking as part of a VET qualification.
Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
- Students must be interested in a relevant vocation as part of Business Administration, Creative Industries, Screen & Media and/or Visual Arts industry.
- Students must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
- Dress appropriately and wear Personal Protective Equipment as part of certain work tasks and duties.
- Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
- Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
- Be punctual and notify the workplace supervisor and careers teacher of any planned or unplanned absence from placement.
- Follow management instructions carefully and competently.
- Have good communication skills and display a friendly customer service manner.
- Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements and have completed OHS modules as part of their course or school subject.
- Work as a productive team member and have skills in effective communication.
- Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
- Respect other people’s belongings.
- Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
- Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course or school subject.
- Take their Workplace Learning Record and/or have course assessment tasks to complete at work placement every day.
- Personal mobile phones are not required and should only be used out of work hours or on meal breaks.

Dress Requirements

Dress requirements will be discussed with the successful student prior to commencement.

Special Transport Requirements

The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) is responsible for the student’s transport to and from the workplace. If it is proposed that the student may need to undertake vehicle travel with their employer and/or supervisor during the arrangement (including transporting the student to and/or from the workplace), the employer must complete the Structured Workplace Learning Travel and Accommodation Form. The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) must give their consent by also completing this form.
