This is a great placement opportunity as it will give you a broad range of experiences across different aspects of this large sporting retail business. You will be part of a supportive, inclusive organisation and exposed to all sorts of roles and business areas. You will learn the retail side of the business as well as the warehousing part. Students must be prepared to walk into the store, be well presented and able to communicate if they are interested in a placement in the retail industry.
Skills You Might Learn
During your placement, you may undertake the following:
- Replenish point of sale areas ie: bags, register rolls, stationery.
- Dust shelving, fixtures and stock.
- Assist with packaging of purchased items.
- Refill floor stock and face-up or move stock forward.
- Liaise with other staff and customers
- Learn the functions of a retail business
- Answer phones, operate computer
- Re-order stock
- Operate retail technology - POS, pricing equipment, scanners, EFTPOS.
- Learn retail procedures for EFTPOS, laybys, gift vouchers, refunds.
- Develop customer service skills
Typical Tasks & Duties
Mobile Phone; Students are not to use their phone during work time. Students should discuss the workplace phone policy with their supervisor.
Students will gain hands-on experience across many aspects of the business. This placement will provide you with a range of opportunities to develop your skills while working alongside experienced industry professionals.
Student Requirements
Prior to the interview with the host employer, students are required to review the businesses web page to learn some background information on the organisation and what it is they do. Students are required to walk in to the store, be well presented and able to communicate effectively to discuss a possible future placement. Whilst the students are attending a work placement they are expected to: Dress appropriately Maintain interest and participate in work duties. Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner. Be punctual Follow management instructions Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements Work within the team, Listen and take advice from fellow workers. Participate in business activities as required. Respect other people’s belongings. Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference. Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their VET Retail course. Take their Log Book to the work placement every day.
Dress Requirements
Neat, casual sporting attire.
Shirt will be provided by Host.
Special Transport Requirements
Student is to arrange own transport to and from the employer.
