A great opportunity to learn more about the role of a in the Retail Industry as a Retail Trade Assistant (Sales Assistant). Would ideally suit someone with a passion for liaising with and providing a service at point of sale for trade and walk in customers in a general retail trade environment. This placement as a Sales Assistant leads to pathways into general retail trade environments.

The SWL Opportunity is ideally suited to a VCE-VM, VPC or VCE student studying VET Retail as part of their study program.

This placement will provide the necessary skills for students to collect/receive and store stock, set up and store equipment and tools and provide assistance at point of sale as well as gain valuable understanding of all general trade products including outdoor and BBQ settings, flooring, pool supplies, chemicals, blinds and awnings, hand and power tools and equipment as well as general maintenance and home improvement supplies to assist all customer types.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Task and duties will include, assist on the shop floor in the customer counter services department, point of sale check out of customer purchases, customer service, security, product and price checks, replenishing stock and displays within this departments work requirements. Working in the customer counter services department would introduce students to walk in and qualified trades people, large product range across all departments and the different products and materials used within industries provided for at the warehouse.

Student Requirements

Desire to work and gain experience with customer service in the General Retail Trade Industry. Students attending this placement must be able to pay attention to detail, interact well with customers and provide a high level of service, display good communication skills and have a strong work ethic. Students with a positive attitude towards Retail Trades Industry who are self-motivated, willing to listen and follow instruction are encouraged to consider a future SWL placement to develop skills learned from their VDSS subject relating to Retail Sales.

Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
• Students must be interested in the “Insert industry-based subject’ and possess good communication skills.
• Students must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
• Dress appropriately.
• Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
• Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
• Be punctual.
• Follow management instructions.
• Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
• Work within the team.
• Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
• Respect other people’s belongings.
• Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
• Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
• Take their Logbook to the work placement every day.

Dress Requirements

The student will be required to present in the following work attire;
• Work pants
• Work boots

Bunnings Mildura will provide a Bunnings Shirt and/or Jumper.

Bunnings Mildura will also provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the tasks and duties carried out by the student.

KMART Mildura is a supplier of appropriate work pants and boots.

Special Transport Requirements

Public Transport is limited, students to check bus transport availability and or speak to parents/carer to organise transport prior to contacting employer.
