Typical Tasks & Duties

Students are permitted to learn how to use plant or equipment only if they are explicitly required in the performance criteria or assessment requirements of a unit of competency the student is undertaking as part of a VET qualification.
Students may assist or observe trained staff with the following activities:
- Clearing job sites and unpacking and packing away equipment as directed and supervised by the workplace supervisor.
- Assisting trained staff with related construction activities.
- Engaging with customers related to building and construction activities as advised by trained staff.
- Traditional concreting preparations, preparing a building site.
- Handling tools and equipment for the preparation of slabs and form work.
- Some site clearing and cleaning, form work and unboxing concrete pads.
- Observing concrete preparation work, observing boxing in, and observing the pouring of concrete slabs.
- Completing all related tasks as assigned by assisting trained staff.

Student Requirements

Students are encouraged to consider a SWL placement to develop skills learned from their school subject and/or in their VET course in in Building and Construction.
The following requirements must be met;
- Students may undertake tasks and typical duties only if they are completing a relevant VET qualification and the structured workplace learning will allow them to obtain or further develop the skills and knowledge outlined in a relevant unit of competency within the qualification.
- Students must have completed the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) module in the relevant VET course, along with a completed White Card (Construction Induction Card).
- Students are required to have a keen interest in the Building & Construction Industry.
- Students must be physically fit to work in a fast paced work environment.
- Students must have a willingness to learn and be able to follow instructions carefully and competently.
- Punctuality is important and any planned or unplanned absences must be reported to both the workplace supervisor and the careers teacher.
- Students should only undertake this SWL placement if they are motivated and willing to actively participate in tasks and duties that will enhance their employability skills.
- Personal mobile phones are not required and should only be used out of work hours or on meal breaks.
- Students are to complete any applicable relevant course work and/or Workplace Learning Record entries as outlined in the SWL Arrangement.

Dress Requirements

Please discuss with the employer at the preplacement interview. Protective, industrial clothing including safety boots will be required. A hat and sunscreen are essential for working outdoors. Appropriate PPE must be worn in accordance with WHS policy and procedure.

The student will be required to arrange their own transport; if transport is presenting a problem please contact CGLLEN to discuss available options and support that can be provided. If it is proposed that the student may need to undertake vehicle travel with their employer and/or supervisor during the arrangement (including transporting the student to and/or from the workplace), the employer must complete the Structured Workplace Learning Travel and Accommodation Form. The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) must give their consent by also completing this form.
