Opportunities exist for students completing Vocational Education and Training (VET) in engineering as part of either a Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or VCEVM to complete a 20-day Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) placement as a Metal Fabricator at Loy Yang B Power Station.
Loy Yang B is a thermal power station comprising two electricity generating units which together provide up to 1,200MW of baseload power and supply approximately 20% of Victoria’s energy needs.

Skills Attained You will acquire practical skills, competencies and knowledge relevant to the fabrication trade to compliment your studies and assist in preparing you for the world of work.
Typical Tasks & Duties
You will assist qualified Metal Fabricators to perform periodic, preventive, corrective and emergency maintenance on power station plant, equipment and systems.
Metal Fabricators carry out tasks including gas cutting and welding, electric arc welding, steel fabrication from technical drawings, fault identification, and repairs to fabricated equipment. You will obtain the skills required to use basic hand tools and measuring equipment. Sound knowledge in all safety aspects
and hazard identification associated with the trade will also be gained.
Students will be directly supervised at all times.
Student Requirements
Students must be completing a Certificate II in Engineering (Fabrication) to be eligible to complete this placement.
Students must be eager to learn and gain new skills, be able to follow instructions and have excellent communication skills. You must demonstrate attention to detail, pride in your work and problem-solving skills.
Dress Requirements
Students are required to wear safe, suitable work clothing. Limbs must be covered with long-sleeves and trousers at all times.
Students must supply and wear their own steel-capped safety boots.
Loy Yang B will provide any other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that is required for the placement such as overalls, safety helmet, safety glasses and hearing protection.
Special Transport Requirements
Students will be responsible for arranging their own transport to and from Loy Yang B Power Station.
