A great opportunity is available at the Mildura Base Public Hospital (MBPH) in the Allied Health department to complete a Structured Workplace Learning placement (SWL Opportunity) with qualified experienced industry staff in all aspects of the Allied Health Industry.
Mildura Base Public Hospital is a 172-bed (level 1) tertiary teaching hospital, offering services to both public and private patients. Mildura Base Public Hospital is the major public referral health service for the Northern Mallee sub-region of the Loddon Mallee region of Victoria, the far west region of New South Wales, and the Riverland area of South Australia. We're also a referral centre for smaller regional services including Mallee Track Health & Community Health Services and Robinvale District Health Services. We have a number of affiliations with major Victorian universities to provide both undergraduate and post graduate Medical, Nursing and Allied health education, clinical placements and training.
Students will experience assisting in Allied Health Professions including, Physiotherapy, Speech Pathology, Dietary, Occupational Therapy and Aquatic Physiotherapy working in a Health Services environment at the hospital. The SWL Opportunity may also undertake reading and administration tasks and duties during the work placement period. MBPH emphasises the promotion of health, wellbeing and independence in a social model of health. Placement at the MBPH will provide a broad range of experience within the Allied Health sector.at a Health Services facility.
The SWL Opportunity is ideally suited to a VCE-VM, VPC or VCE student studying VET Allied Health Assistance as part of their study program.

Typical Tasks & Duties
Students will assist Allied Health Professionals in a broad range of industry programs within the Allied Health environment at the hospital.
The student may undertake the following tasks and duties;
- Communicate and work in Health Services
- Work with diverse people
- Apply basic principles and practices of infection control
- Participate in workplace health and safety
- Assist with movement
- Respond effectively to behaviours of concern
- Recognise healthy body systems
- Interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately
- Engage with health professionals and the health care system
- General cleaning and housekeeping as required
Student Requirements
Students with a positive attitude towards the Health Industry and Allied Health who are self-motivated, willing to listen and follow instruction are encouraged to consider a future SWL placement to develop skills learned from their VET subject relating to Allied Health.
Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
• Students must be interested in the Allied Health Assistance and possess good communication skills.
• Students must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
• Dress appropriately.
• Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
• Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
• Be punctual.
• Follow management instructions.
• Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
• Work within the team.
• Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
• Respect other people’s belongings.
• Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
• Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
• Take their Logbook to the work placement every day.
Students will be requested to confirm pre placement requirements and onboarding information which will include vaccination history as instructed by the Host Employer. Vaccination requirements are mandatory with MBPH. Students may be required to undertake an internal MBPH training course.
Dress Requirements
The student must be well presented, clean and hygienic at all times.
- Neat, professional clothes to be worn (as if you were going to work),
- Closed in comfortable shoes.
- Denim, leggings, torn clothing and inappropriate slogans are not acceptable.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the tasks and duties carried out by the student, will be supplied by the Host Employer.
Special Transport Requirements
Public Transport is limited, students to check bus transport availability and or speak to parents/carer to organise transport prior to contacting employer.
