Mildura Health Private Hospital is a not for profit 51 bed surgical and medical hospital located in regional Victoria, approximately six hours drive north west of Melbourne and four hours drive from Adelaide. We have a strong emphasis on providing high quality healthcare whilst at the same time fostering a relaxed, friendly home like environment. Our Doctors and staff are dedicated, highly skilled and committed to providing excellent patient care.

We provide healthcare to both privately insured and self insured patients and we also provide Tier 1 healthcare services to the Veteran Community. Our hospital opened in 1985 and has been owned by the current owners Mildura Health Fund since 1997.

The Structured Workplace Learning Placement (SWL Placement) is with Mildura Health Private Hospital as an Allied Health Assistant in the Health Industry. Allied Health Assistants work under the direct supervision of health care professionals (such as doctors and nurses, qualified professionals) to provide therapeutic and program-related support in a variety of assistant roles such as occupational therapy, physiotherapy, podiatry, speech pathology, dentistry and nutrition.

Allied Health mostly will provide goal-based therapy for clients. Tasks can include providing patient care and encouraging patients to complete specific treatment plans related to injury, illness, well-being or disability-related physical issues.

This opportunity is for a student to gain structured workplace learning as an Allied Health Assistant in a supportive team environment. This is an ideal placement for a student studying a VDSS subject in Allied Health to gain skills within a Health Industry.

Liaising and working with supervisors, colleagues, industry personnel, patients/clients and suppliers.

Typical Tasks & Duties

The student will be part of a friendly professional and efficient team. Task and duties may include but are not limited to;

• Assist allied health professional
• Physical and social support to patient
• Administer clinical services and modalities
• Transfer patients
• Communication of patient progress/communication with other staff
• Assist with mobility and gait
• Provision of equipment
• Patient education
• Provision of health care to patients
• Supervise/conduct exercise classes
• Prepare patients for treatment
• Individual or group therapy
• Coordinate and assist in the operation of services
• Assist and coordinate health service
• Administration
• Stock ordering/requisition
• Prepare/maintain environment
• Equipment maintenance
• Health promotion
• Monitor and update health care-specific database
• Recording/statistics/database
• Housekeeping
• Cleaning

Student Requirements

Students with a positive attitude towards the Health Industry are self-motivated, have a consistent and good work ethic, willing to listen and follow instructions are encouraged to consider a SWL Placement to develop skills learned from their VDSS subject in Allied Health.

Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
• Student must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
• Maintain all privacy and confidentially requirements.
• Dress appropriately as per the MHPH requirements.
• Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
• Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
• Be punctual.
• Follow all instructions.
• Have good communication skills.
• Act in accordance with Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) requirements.
• Work within the team.
• Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
• Respect other people’s belongings.
• Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
• Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
• Take their Log Book to the work placement every day.

Dress Requirements

The student must be well presented, clean and hygienic at all times
• Flat, non-slip, enclosed black work shoes.
• Confirm attire with MHPH representative- department requirements.
• Long hair must be tied back, nails must be kept short and clean.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the tasks and duties carried out by the student, will be supplied by the Host Employer.

Special Transport Requirements

Public Transport is limited, students to check bus transport availability and or speak to parents/carer to organise transport prior to contacting employer.
