A great opportunity is available at the Mallee Track Health and Community Services in the Allied Health departments to complete a Structured Workplace Learning placement (SWL Opportunity) with qualified experienced industry staff in all aspects of the Allied Health Industry.

Students may experience a broad range of Allied Health including Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, Dietary and Occupational Therapy, group activities and administration during the placement. MTHCS is a dynamic organisation which emphasises the promotion of health, wellbeing and independence in a social model of health.

The SWL Opportunity is ideally suited to a VCE-VM, VPC or VCE student studying VET Allied Health Assistance as part of their study program.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Students will assist Allied Health staff in a broad range of industry programs delivered within the Allied Health department supporting allied health professionals by assisting with focusing on patient care, program implementation and administrative duties.

Responsibilities of Qualified Allied Health Assistants include:
Patient Care:
Assisting with direct patient care activities, such as personal care, movement, and transfers, under the guidance of allied health professionals.
Program Implementation:
Implementing and supporting allied health professionals' therapy strategies and programs in various settings, including the client's home or community.
Administrative Support:
Handling appointments, coordinating programs, and managing the administrative aspects of patient care, such as gathering and organizing information.
Client Assessment:
Interviewing clients to gather information about their condition, healthcare history, and support needs.
Collaboration:
Working collaboratively with other health professionals, including doctors, nurses, and other allied health professionals, to ensure effective patient care.
Communication:
Communicating with clients and their families, providing information about their care and support.

Students tasks and duties may include:
- Communicate and work in health or community services.
- Work with diverse people.
- Apply basic principles and practices of infection control.
- Participate in workplace health and safety.
- Assist with movement.
- Respond effectively to behaviours of concern.
- Provide basic first aid.
- Recognise healthy body systems.
- Interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately.
- Engage with health professionals and the health care system.
- Transport individuals.
- Assisting with various general administration tasks.
- Maintaining facility cleanliness as directed.

Student Requirements

Students with a positive attitude towards Allied Health and Health who are self-motivated, willing to listen and follow instruction are encouraged to consider a future SWL placement to develop skills learned from their VET subject relating to Allied Health Assistance.

Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
• Students must be interested in Allied Health and Health and possess good communication skills.
• Students must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
• Dress appropriately.
• Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
• Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
• Be punctual.
• Follow management instructions.
• Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
• Work within the team.
• Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
• Respect other people’s belongings.
• Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
• Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
• Take their Logbook to the work placement every day.

Pre-placement Requirements.
MTHCS may require students to undertake internal MTHCS course.

Dress Requirements

The student must be well presented, clean and hygienic at all times.
• Neat professional business attire is required.
• Flat, non-slip, enclosed work shoes.
• Please do not wear clothing which others may find offensive.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the tasks and duties carried out by the student, will be supplied by the Host Employer.

Special Transport Requirements

Public Transport is limited, students to check bus transport availability and or speak to parents/carer to organise transport prior to contacting employer.
