The friendly owner operators at S.E.D.E Cafe have an opportunity for a student to join them for a SWL placement as a Food and Beverage Assistant, and a great start to gaining exposure to the overall running of a popular cafe and catering business. Students will have the opportunity to attain a broad range of skills while studying a certificate in Hospitality. These may include valuable general employability skills such as:

- Industry specific Occupational Health and and Safety (OH&S).
The student may also attain vital industry specific skills which will relate to their secondary school studies they include:
- Hands-on practical experience.
- Observing and learning from industry qualified and experienced professionals.
- Working in real-life scenarios.
- Working with tools and equipment necessary to the occupation.
- Liaising and working with supervisors, colleagues, industry personnel, customers/clients and suppliers.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Students are permitted to learn how to use equipment only if they are explicitly required in the performance criteria or assessment requirements of a unit of competency the student is undertaking as part of a VET qualification. The successful student will work under direct supervision of the Supervisor in charge.
Students may assist or observe trained S.E.D.E Cafe staff with the following activities:
- The student may be asked to take part in greeting customers as they arrive.
- Serving food and beverage to tables.
- Making and serving refreshments.
- Point of Sale operations.
- All related cleaning, preparation and packing away of tables and seating.
- Maintain a tidy outdoor dining area.
- Participate in opening and closing procedures and the replenishment of stock.
The student will also complete general cleaning duties of service counter, including but not limited to;
- Cleaning dining tables and all cafe areas before, during and after service.
- Polishing glassware and cutlery as required.
- Kitchen duties including food handling and dishwashing as instructed.
- Students are required to be physically fit and capable of working in a fast paced cafe.

Student Requirements

Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
- Students must have completed the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) module in Work Related Skills or else have begun the OH&S module in the relevant VET course.
- Student must be interested in the Hospitality industry.
- Student must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
- Dress appropriately.
- Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
- Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
- Punctuality is important and any planned or unplanned absences must be reported to both the workplace supervisor and the careers teacher.
- Students should only undertake this SWL placement if they are motivated and willing to actively participate in tasks and duties that will enhance their employability skills.
- Students must display a reliable nature and be willing to develop the capabilities of a food and beverage attendant.
- Act in accordance with OH&S requirements.
- Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
- Respect other people’s belongings.
- Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
- Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their training course.
- Personal mobile phones are not required and should only be used out of work hours or on meal breaks.

Dress Requirements

Please discuss specific dress requirements with the employer at the preplacement interview. Students are required to wear enclosed toe non slip shoes. Long hair must be tied up.

Special Transport Requirements

The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) is responsible for the student’s transport to and from the workplace. If it is proposed that the student may need to undertake vehicle travel with their employer and/or supervisor during the arrangement (including transporting the student to and/or from the workplace), the employer must complete the Structured Workplace Learning Travel and Accommodation Form. The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) must give their consent by also completing this form.
