This is an exciting opportunity for a Structured Workplace Learning Placement (SWL Opportunity) with Parks Victoria as a Park Ranger Assistant. The experience takes in the Mallee Region where the student can learn about groups working in at Parks Victoria in the region whilst learning and developing foundation level skill and ability as a Park Ranger Assistant in the land and conservation management field.

Workplace Location: Irymple Depot, 308 - 390 Koorlong Avenue, Irymple VIC 3498.

The SWL Opportunity is ideally suited to a VCE-VM, VPC or VCE student studying VET Land and Conservation Management or Environmental and Sustainability as part of their study program.

Typical Tasks & Duties

As a Park Ranger Assistant, you would assist in the day to day work activities at the Irymple Depot and out in the field under the direct supervision of Qualified Park Rangers.

The student may undertake the following tasks and duties;
• Apply OHS requirements, policies and procedures.
• Conduct workplace communication.
• Organise and complete daily work activities.
• Reading and interpreting routine information.
• Improving habitats for wildlife.
• Learning how to propagate plants and collect seeds.
• Taking photos of endangered species and habitats.
• Providing visitor information along popular tracks and campgrounds.
• Providing interpretation and guided walks.
• Following job instructions.
• Following verbal instructions.

Student Requirements

Students with a positive attitude towards Land and Conservation Management who are self-motivated, willing to listen and follow instruction are encouraged to consider a future SWL placement to develop skills learned from their VDSS subject relating to Land and Conservation Management.

Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
• Students must be interested in the “Insert industry-based subject’ and possess good communication skills.
• Students must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
• Dress appropriately.
• Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
• Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
• Be punctual.
• Follow management instructions.
• Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
• Work within the team.
• Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
• Respect other people’s belongings.
• Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
• Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
• Take their Logbook to the work placement every day.

Student will require to bring lunch, snacks and drink including water each day to their placement.

Pre-Placement Requirements: Students will be required to complete the following documents and lodge prior to placement commencement with Parks Victoria.
1. SWL Arrangement and Travel Forms to be completed, signed where required.
2. EFT Payment Form.
3. ABN Statement Declaration.

Dress Requirements

The student will be required to present at work in the following work attire;
• Work pants.
• Hi visual shirt, long sleeve.
• Hi visual jacket, long sleeve (for cold weather).
• Steel capped work boots.
• Wide brim hat and head beanie (for cold weather).


Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the tasks and duties carried out by the student, will be supplied by the Host Employer.

Special Transport Requirements

Public Transport is limited, students to check bus transport availability and or speak to parents/carer to organise transport prior to contacting employer.
