Typical Tasks & Duties

The student will be part of a professional and hardworking team in Kitchen Operations in the upmarket Bistro and Cafe environments. The student will be mainly responsible for the preparation of a menu. The student will participate in the service times practicing food service standards to ensure a memorable eating experience for diners. The student will also complete cleaning duties. Must be capable of working on their feet with attention to detail through preparation, service and pack down processes to ensure high standards are achieved and maintained. The student will work under direct supervision of the Executive Chef and Supervisor in charge.

The student may undertake the following tasks and duties;
• Work effectively with others.
• Use food preparation equipment.
• Prepare dishes using basic methods of cookery.
• Prepare appetisers and salads.
• Prepare food to meet special dietary requirements.
• Work effectively as a cook.
• Clean kitchen premises and equipment.
• Produce desserts.
• Use hygienic practices for food safety.
• Participate in safe food handling practices.
• Maintain the quality of perishable items.
• Participate in safe work practices.
• Provide service to customers.

Student Requirements

Students with a positive attitude towards the Tourism, Travel and Hospitality Industry as a Cook (Kitchen Operations Assistant), with a keen eye for detail and are self-motivated, have a consistent and good work ethic, willing to listen and follow instructions are encouraged to consider a SWL placement to develop skills learned from their VET subject in Kitchen Operations.

Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
• Dress appropriately.
• Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
• Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
• Be punctual.
• Follow management instructions.
• Have good communication skills.
• Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
• Work within the team.
• Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
• Respect other people’s belongings.
• Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
• Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
• Take their Log Book to the work placement every day.

Please Note: It is a requirement for the applicant to have obtained a Food Handlers Accreditation.

Dress Requirements

The student must be well presented as back of house staff can work in view of the customers.
• Flat, non-slip, enclosed work shoes.
• Black pants.
• Black t-shirt (plain) and Chefs jacket (if available).
• Long hair must be tied back, nails must be kept short and clean.
• Good personal hygiene.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the tasks and duties carried out by the student, will be supplied by the Host Employer.

Special Transport Requirements

Public Transport is limited, students to check bus transport availability and or speak to parents/carer to organise transport prior to contacting employer.
