Located in the township of Ararat, The Barkly Bistro Bar and Accommodation caters for small and large groups, offering guest and public dining and lounge areas. The ground floor restaurant offers an excellent dining experience, hosting breakfast, lunch and dinners from Monday to Saturday and open for brunch on Sundays. Upstairs the accommodation facilities are country luxe, catering for guests who wish to explore the surrounding region and come back to comfortable rooms and enjoy fresh local cuisine. This placement will give students the opportunity to broaden their experience in a small business setting and develop skills in the hospitality industry. There may be opportunities for successful placement students to gain casual employment. Typical Tasks & Duties

Typical tasks and duties will depend on the workplace supervisor's requests at the time in which the student commences placement. Front of house may include, greeting and serving customers, setting up tables for service, clearing tables, taking orders, and packing away during closing procedures. Back of house may include, food preparation, serving up meals, garnish preparation, cleaning dishes and other kitchen duties.
Students will be responsible for the following tasks;
- Assisting trained staff with related food service or customer service activities as instructed.
- Engaging with customers as advised by trained staff.
- Completing all cleaning, preparation and opening and closing tasks as assigned by trained staff.
- Students may undertake tasks and typical duties only if they are completing a relevant VET qualification and the structured workplace learning will allow them to obtain or further develop the skills and knowledge outlined in a relevant unit of competency within the qualification.

Student Requirements

Students are encouraged to consider a SWL placement to develop skills learned from their Industry and Enterprise subject and/or their VET course in Hospitality or Business Services. Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
- Spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
- Dress appropriately and wear Personal Protective Equipment as part of certain work tasks and duties.
- Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
- Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
- Be punctual and notify the workplace supervisor and careers teacher of any planned or unplanned absence from placement.
- Follow management instructions carefully and competently.
- Have good communication skills and display a friendly customer service manner.
- Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) requirements and have completed OH&S modules as part of their course or school subject.
- Work as a productive team member and have skills in effective communication.
- Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
- Respect other people’s belongings.
- Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
- Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
- Take their Workplace Learning Record and/or course assessment tasks to the work placement every day to complete.
- Personal mobile phones are not required and should only be used out of work hours or on meal breaks.

Dress Requirements

To be discussed with employer prior to commencement. All Personal Protective Equipment will be supplied by the employer and must be worn in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety procedures.

Special Transport Requirements

The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) is responsible for the student’s transport to and from the workplace. If it is proposed that the student may need to undertake vehicle travel with their employer and/or supervisor during the arrangement (including transporting the student to and/or from the workplace), the employer must complete the Structured Workplace Learning Travel and Accommodation Form. The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) must give their consent by also completing this form.
