Echuca Twin Rivers Specialist School

Echuca Specialist School provides education for children ages 5-18 years with
intellectual and associated disabilities. The school was the junior section of Tehan House Day Training Centre. In 1991 it became an SDS for students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities under DE&T. In January 1997 the school became a dual mode setting enrolling students with mild through to severe intellectual disabilities. The school’s name was then changed to Echuca Specialist School.

Since that time our student numbers have progressively grown, with indications that this trend will continue into the future.
The school prides itself on having an open and welcoming environment that
encourages parent and community participation. Links with the community are
encouraged. The school plays host to students on work experience, or community
service programmes as well as providing on site training for staff.

Skills You Might Learn

The student will gain knowledge of programs and processes in this industry. How to engage and help organize students into their learning groups and help with their socialization will be part of the role. OH&S standards, rules and regulations in regard to the disability sector will be part on on the job training.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Duties will include
- Classroom observation
- Small group interaction
- Assisting students in reading and writing skills
- Assisting staff in student tasks and activities
- Connecting with different age groups
- Mentoring students
- Preparing activities

Student Requirements

The student who works in the disability sector needs to be flexible, patient and understanding and have a supportive and caring nature.The student needs to have an understanding and a commitment to the rights of people with a disability, be able to communicate and work with other staff members and be able to cope with the physical demands of this position.

Dress Requirements

Student must wear clean, neat casual attire
Comfortable flat closed toe shoes
