Foragers Cafe is a locally owned cafe located at the Arts Centre in Ararat. The cafe offers a range of freshly made products from salads to cakes and slices, eat in or take away. Foragers is a 35 seat cafe and quick service takeaway that serves premium hot and cold food and beverages. Foragers Cafe also provides the local region with quality catering for small or large groups.

They have an opportunity for a student to join them for a placement as a Cafe and Catering Assistant, and a great start to gaining exposure to the overall running of a popular cafe and catering business. - Working with tools and equipment necessary to the occupation and business.

Typical Tasks & Duties

The successful student will work under direct supervision of the Supervisor in charge.
Students may assist or observe trained Foragers Cafe staff with the following activities:
- The student may be asked to take part in greeting customers as they arrive.
- Food and beverage service to tables.
- Making refreshments.
- Cash register operations.
- Setting of tables.
- Maintaining and cleaning the outdoor dining area.
- Participate in opening and closing procedures and the replenishment of stock.
The student will also complete general cleaning duties of service counter, including but not limited to;
- Cleaning dining tables and all cafe areas before, during and after service.
- Polishing glassware and cutlery as required.
- Kitchen duties including food handling and dishwashing as instructed.
- Students are required to be physically fit and capable of working in a fast paced cafe.

Student Requirements

Students are encouraged to consider a WE placement to develop skills learned from their school subject. The following requirements must be met;
- Students are required to have completed the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) module in the relevant VET course.
- Student must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
- Dress appropriately.
- Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
- Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
- Be punctual and notify the workplace supervisor and careers teacher of any planned or unplanned absence from placement. Please discuss extension of placement dates if there are nominal hours to be completed as part of the VET course.
- Follow management instructions.
- Have good communication skills.
- Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) requirements.
- Work within a team environment and share tasks and duties.
- Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
- Respect other people’s belongings.
- Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
- Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
- Take their Workplace Learning Record or course assessment tasks to the work placement every day.

Dress Requirements

Students are required to wear black pants/jeans, enclosed toe non slip shoes are required. Black T-shirt and aprons will be supplied. Hair must be tied up.

Special Transport Requirements

The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) is responsible for the student’s transport to and from the workplace. If it is proposed that the student may need to undertake vehicle travel with their employer and/or supervisor during the arrangement (including transporting the student to and/or from the workplace), the employer must complete the Work Experience Travel and Accommodation Form. The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) must give their consent by also completing this form.
