Locally owned and operated in Ararat and District, Pearse Shearing has an opportunity for students to experience farming through work as a sheep shearing professional. Roger coordinates a shearing team of over fifty professionals, including Shearers, Shedhands, Wool Classers, Wool Pressers, Wool Rollers and Rouseabouts. If you are passionate about all aspects of shearing, Roger's team are active supporters for young people to reach their career goals. Roger will organise a workplace learning place with a supervisor from his team to guide and instruct students on what is required on a daily basis in a job at a shearing shed. - Working with tools and equipment necessary to the occupation and business.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Students will assist trained staff in performing duties, students receiving high level supervision. Being able to work as part of a team and a willingness to watch and learn the differing job roles are essential for success in this workplace learning place.
Students may assist or observe trained staff with the following activities:
- Assisting in the crutching and shearing of sheep by taking part in Rouseabout duties.
- Board duties.
- Collect and handle fleeces.
- Sweeping and clearing debris.
- Completing all related cleaning and set up and pack away tasks as assigned by trained staff.

Student Requirements

Students are encouraged to consider a WE placement to develop skills learned from their Work-Related Skills subject. The following requirements must be met;

- Students must be screened for QFever and vaccinated, if required.
- Where students are not completing a relevant VET qualification, they may only undertake tasks and duties as mentioned in the Department’s guidelines for work experience with animals, students under 15 years of age are NOT permitted to undertake work experience involving direct contact with animals. They may however, undertake other animal related activities that are safe and suitable, for example, preparing feeds.
- Before commencing placement, students should complete the Proposed Work Experience with Animals – Summary of Student’s Experience form to provide information about their experience and capability with animals. This should be reviewed by the school's workplace learning coordinator and forwarded to the employer before they make a decision on accepting the student for placement.
- Students are required to have completed the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) modules- General module and any applicable industry OH&S modules.
- Students must maintain a diary or logbook and/or complete work experience assignment and other tasks that have been set by the school.
- Students must adhere to strict Privacy and Confidentiality policy and procedures.
- Students must have a willingness to learn and be able to follow instructions carefully and competently.
- Students must be willing to communicate clearly and work as a productive team member. This includes notifying the workplace learning coordinator and the host supervisor of any planned or unplanned absences from placement.
- Personal mobile phones are not required and should only be used out of work hours or on offsite meal breaks.

Dress Requirements

To be discussed prior to placement. Comfortable clothing that is appropriate to working in Agriculture- work boots may be a requirement. All personal protective equipment will be supplied by the company as required.

Special Transport Requirements

The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) is responsible for the student’s transport to and from the workplace. This opportunity does require the student to undertake vehicle travel with their employer and/or supervisor during the arrangement (including transporting the student to and/or from the workplace), the employer must complete the Work Experience Travel and Accommodation Form. The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) must give their consent by also completing this form.
