Typical Tasks & Duties
The student as a Construction Trades Assistant will assist and work with experienced tradespeople to complete construction of sheds on construction sites.
The student may undertake the following tasks and duties;
• Work effectively and sustainably in the construction industry.
• Plan and organise work.
• Conduct workplace communication.
• Carry out measurements and calculations.
• Read and interpret plans and specifications.
• Apply OHS requirements, policies and procedures in the construction industry.
• Use carpentry hand and power tools.
• Safe handling and use of plant.
• Erect and dismantle formwork for footings and slabs on ground.
• Handle carpentry materials.
• Handle construction materials.
• Apply basic leveling procedures.
Student Requirements
Students with a positive attitude towards Building and Construction Industry who are self-motivated, willing to listen and follow instruction are encouraged to consider a future SWL placement to develop skills learned from their VDSS subject relating to Building and Construction.
Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
• Students must be interested in the Building and Construction Industry and possess good communication skills.
• Students must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
• Dress appropriately.
• Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
• Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
• Be punctual.
• Follow management instructions.
• Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
• Work within the team.
• Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
• Respect other people’s belongings.
• Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
• Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
• Take their Logbook to the work placement every day.
Students will require a level of fitness to undertake manual handling tasks and the ability to stand for long periods working in the construction industry.
Student Responsibility to;
Carry a Victorian Construction Induction Card (White Card), please note: obtaining the White Card is required prior to attending the work placement.
Dress Requirements
The student will be required to present in the following work attire;
• Work pants or shorts.
• Hi visual shirt.
• Steel capped work boots.
• Wide brim hat.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the tasks and duties carried out by the student, will be supplied by the Host Employer.
Special Transport Requirements
Public Transport is limited, students to check bus transport availability and or speak to parents/carer to organise transport prior to contacting employer.
