Skills You Might Learn
Skills students will assist with and learn in this placement include working in an environmentally sustainable way in a wood based industry. They will observe the use of furniture making hand and power tools. Make measurements and calculations. Read and interpret work documents. Prepare surfaces for finishing. Join solid timber, fabricate custom furniture, hand make timber joints, prepare for cabinet installation, check and measure fit of cabinets, install fitted cabinets and components, select and apply hardware and apply surface coating by spray and hand techniques.
Typical Tasks & Duties
In this position students will support the tradesmen to make, repair or install kitchens and furniture using solid timber, flat-panel or timber based products and a wide range of laminates and other materials. They will need to communicate well to determine the requirements of each specific job, They will measure and draw site layouts for manufactured furniture. They will read and interpret work documents in order to prepare accurate cutting lists for jobs. Learn to understand and select timber products for door and furniture production. Help prepare and assemble cabinets for installation. Select and install hardware to furnishings, such as handles and hinges. Clean and maintain work areas, including machines and tools to maintain a safe work environment.
Student Requirements
The student must have an interest in the industry. They must be willing to do physical work and have and understanding of measurement. They must be prepared to work in a team environment and good communication skills will be highly valued. The student should make the first call to enquire about the placement and be prepared to have an interview for the placement position.
Dress Requirements
Neat and tidy trade wear; trousers and shirt and safety work boots must be worn.
