Do your work experience at an award-winning community radio station based in Castlemaine, broadcasting music, community news, talks and specialist programs and events throughout a large area of Central Victoria.

This is an opportunity to work at a not-for-profit organisation owned and operated by the community who work with sponsors and listeners for day to day broadcasting and administrative costs. The station operates from the Workspace building in Halford Street, Castlemaine with over 100 volunteer presenters and over 750 subscribers.

For students with a passion for creative industries, who can learn about the industry and pathways. An interest in music and knowledge of or ability to learn software such as Canva (graphic design) Audacaity (sound editing) Word (scripting) would be great, but not necessary..


Skills You Might Learn

Students will gain a rare insight into the radio/media industry together with the opportunity to learn about radio presenting and preparation.

Students will also learn about:
• verbal communication
• time management
• personal management
• general office work relating to the industry and
• training new volunteers

Typical Tasks & Duties

Students will assist studio and administration staff with:
• general administration tasks
• answering phone calls and delivering messages
• assist with the training of new volunteers
• sound editing
• timetabling and scheduling duties
• Production of the Lowdown Community news and events segment: researching, scripting, recording and editing.
• Social media content creation (reels / stories)
• Graphic design (creating a poster / social media content)
• Radio presenting

Student Requirements

Students must have a genuine interest in media, radio marketing and promotion and ideally, an understanding of visual and audio editing. Whilst the students are attending a work placement they are expected to:
• Dress appropriately
• Maintain interest and participate in work duties
• Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner
• Be punctual
• Follow management instructions
• Work within the team
• Listen and take advice from fellow workers
• Participate in business activities as required
• Respect other people’s belongings
• Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference and demonstrate the skills they have developed at the end of placement.

Dress Requirements

Neat casual dress with covered in shoes (no offensive logos/language or clothing with rips etc.) Jeans and T-shirt OK.

Public transport is available.
