This placement is in a very well equipped and modern residential aged care facility. Students will assist with the resident's care by being involved in the leisure and lifestyle program and/or in the maintenance and gardening department. Skills You Might Learn
Students will gain some hands-on practical experience while assisting staff with the residents. The students will be working in real-life scenarios in a real-life environment so communication skills will be important. Skills attained will include the following;
- Importance of teamwork.
- Time management and punctuality.
- Communication skills in the workplace.
- Experience and familiarity with general healthcare and community care functions.
- Exposure to health-related fields in a professional environment.
- Broader understanding of what a healthcare role involves on a day-to-day basis.
Typical Tasks & Duties
Students will work with facility staff to assist them in their duties in relation to the leisure and lifestyle activities program and/or the maintenance and gardening department . Students will be required to be an active participant in all workplace practices while being closely supervised by staff. Students will be responsible for the following tasks:
- Assisting trained staff with related allied health activities as instructed.
- Engaging with residents in the Leisure and Lifestyle programs as advised by trained staff.
- Setting experiences and activities for residents to participate and support their physical therapy.
- Completing a rotation in maintenance and gardening services as part of the placement.
- Depending on availability of supervisors, rotating in departments to gain a broader understanding of the healthcare and community support programs.
- Completing related cleaning and preparation and pack away tasks as assigned by trained staff.
Student Requirements
Students are encouraged to consider a SWL placement to develop skills learned from their VET course in Community Services and Health, Sports and Recreation and/or Landscaping and Horticulture.
The following requirements must be met;
- The students must have completed the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) in the relevant VET course.
- A National Police Check is a requirement, students are to apply and pay for this check in it's entirety. Please talk to your parent/guardian or careers practitioner about how to apply.
- Students must adhere to strict Privacy and Confidentiality policy and procedures.
- Students are required to have a keen interest in the healthcare and/or community services sector and/or landscaping and horticultural services. Aged care services must form part of the student's interests in order to fulfil rotation through different departments.
- Students must have a willingness to learn and be able to follow instructions carefully and competently.
- Punctuality is important and any planned or unplanned absences must be reported to both the workplace supervisor and the careers teacher. This includes making a time to discuss extending the placement period if assessment requires a certain number of hours or days to be completed.
- Students should only undertake this SWL placement if they are motivated and willing to actively participate in tasks and duties that will enhance their employability skills.
- Personal mobile phones are not required and should only be used out of work hours or on meal breaks.
- Students are to complete any applicable relevant course work and/or Workplace Learning Record (WLR) applicable to their VET course.
Dress Requirements
Please discuss with the workplace supervisor at the pre placement interview. Students undertaking a community services placement will be required to wear neat casual clothing as appropriate for an Aged Care Service- comfortable clothing and closed in toe and heel shoes. A hat will be required for all outdoor activity during the warmer months.
Special Transport Requirements
The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) is responsible for the student’s transport to and from the workplace. If it is proposed that the student may need to undertake vehicle travel with their employer and/or supervisor on excursions or work related travel during the arrangement (including transporting the student to and/or from the workplace), the employer must complete the Structured Workplace Learning Travel and Accommodation Form. The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) must give their consent by also completing this form.
