Work Placement Location: Mildura Arts Centre, 199 Cureton Avenue Mildura.

Mildura Arts Centre is the leading arts and culture hub of North West Victoria. We have a regional art gallery, performing arts theatre, Rio Vista Historic House, sculpture park and a cafe bar in one location.

Operated and managed by Mildura Rural City Council, Mildura Arts Centre is the creative hub of the Sunraysia region. Located just a stone’s throw from the banks of the Murray River, Mildura Arts Centre is home to a 444 seat performing arts theatre, art gallery, Rio Vista Historic House, sculpture park and licensed cafe. MAC also runs a range of ongoing cultural programs for everybody.

A great Work Experience Opportunity (WE Opportunity) with Mildura Arts Centre for a student currently studying arts and culture, music, lighten, sound or entertainment and events. Must have a strong interest in Theatre Production. A variety of career possibilities can be experienced within this role and the opportunity to share innovative ideas. The ability to build customer relationships and gain an understanding in the arts and culture.

The WE Opportunity is ideally suited to a Year 10 student or a VCE student. Share this opportunity with your Careers Transition Pathway Officer or Careers Coordinator.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Student to focus on understanding back of stage duties inline with customer’s or production needs, operating equipment’s, set up and pack up duties. The structure of productions and running to a schedule. Lighting, music and prop requirements. Responsibility to ensure professional housekeeping, and ensuring equipment and props are secured properly, displayed and stored where necessary. Undertake duties as required by the supervisor. Customer service wherever necessary.

• Work effectively in an arts and culture environment.
• Organise personal work requirements.
• Advise on best practices and alternative stage options.
• Identify and respond to security risks.
• Contribute to workplace health and safety.
• Handle equipment and props.
• Safe use of sound and lightening equipment
• Use strategies to respond to routine workplace problems.
• Organise and maintain the theatre environment.
• Follow point-of-sale procedures.
• Use business technology.

Student Requirements

Students with a positive attitude towards arts and culture with a creative mind set who are self-motivated, willing to listen and follow instruction are encouraged to consider a future work placement to develop skills learned from their school subjects relating to Creative Arts & Culture.

Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
• Students must be interested in the arts and culture, be sociable with good communication skills.
• Students must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
• Dress appropriately.
• Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
• Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
• Be punctual.
• Follow management instructions.
• Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
• Work within the team.
• Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
• Respect other people’s belongings.
• Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
• Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
• Take their Log Book to the work placement every day.

Dress Requirements

The student must be well presented, clean and hygienic at all times.
• Neat professional business attire is required.
• Flat, non-slip, enclosed work shoes.
• Please do not wear clothing which others may find offensive.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the tasks and duties carried out by the student, will be supplied by the Host Employer.

Special Transport Requirements

Public Transport is limited, students to check bus transport availability and or speak to parents/carer to organise transport prior to contacting employer.
