Sales assistant
A well-known retailer in the cycling industry, offering a wide range of bicycles, accessories, and services. The shop is providing limited SWL opportunities for students interested in gaining hands-on experience in retail, with a focus on bicycle sales and customer service. This placement offers students a chance to build valuable retail and communication skills within a fast-paced, customer-centric environment, in a fast-growing and environmentally sustainable industry.
Please note, students are required to attend an online interview as a prerequisite for this placement.
Skills You Might Learn
Students will develop strong customer service skills, product knowledge in bicycles and accessories, inventory management, and sales techniques. Additional skills include handling POS systems, building communication and teamwork abilities, and gaining experience in retail store operations in addition to foundational skills in bicycle maintenance.
Typical Tasks & Duties
Students will assist in a variety of retail tasks, including welcoming customers, providing information on different types of bicycles and cycling gear, stocking shelves, handling transactions, and maintaining the overall presentation of the store. Students will also learn how to manage customer queries, assist with product recommendations, and handle sales and point-of-sale (POS) systems. The level of involvement will depend on the student’s attitude, aptitude, and the needs of the store. Students will also have the chance to work alongside experienced bicycle mechanics, learning how to service and repair a variety of bikes. Duties may include;
• Cleaning and inspecting bicycles.
• Assisting with brake and gear adjustments.
• Changing tires.
• Lubricating parts.
• Identifying the necessary tools for each task.
Student Requirements
Students must be studying a related VET course, demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, have an interest in cycling or outdoor activities, and show enthusiasm for learning about retail operations.

The placement is located on a main tram line in Brunswick East, or a short walk from Jewell train station. Bus services are also available in the area.
