Construction assistant

Housed within the Operations Unit at Central Goldfields Shire Council, this Facilities and Maintenance placement is ideal for students who enjoy working outdoors and are interested in trades!
Students will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced staff and gain an insight into the various roles within the department whilst being provided with opportunities to experience first-hand basic technical skills.
Skills You Might Learn
Students will gain an understanding of the role Road Works and Construction plays within the Shire and may have the opportunity to attain a broad range of skills while on work placement including general employability skills such as:
• Communication
• Teamwork
• Punctuality
• Presentation
• Problem solving
• Following instruction
• Working under supervision
• Working in real-life scenarios
The student may also attain vital industry specific skills which will relate to their secondary school studies they include:
• Gaining hands-on practical experience
• Industry specific OH&S
• Observing and learning from industry qualified and experienced professionals
• Planning and organising
• Working with tools and equipment necessary to the occupation.
• Liaising and working with supervisors, colleagues, industry personnel, customers, and suppliers.
Typical Tasks & Duties
Student tasks and duties will vary depending on the time of year and if any events are taking place at the time of placement. Students may assist or observe trained staff with ‘some’ the following activities:
• Understanding the breadth and depth of duties within the roads and works team
• Understanding where the work comes from
• Signage facilitation
• Undertaking light trade related duties such as concreting, set up and finishing, and pothole patching
Student Requirements
Students should have a keen interest in exploring trade careers and/or public safety. Students should arrive on time, be willing to listen and learn, and show initiative.
Dress Requirements
Please discuss with the employer at form signing and providing sizing information as appropriate PPE must be worn in accordance with WHS policy and work procedures.
Students must wear protective clothing e.g., work pants/shorts and a hat (and use sunscreen which is essential for working outdoors).
Other items including steel cap work boots, gloves and vests will be provided by Central Goldfields Shire Council (and students are able to keep the boots!). Long hair must be tied back, and no dangly jewellery.
Special Transport Requirements
Once the students have attended the 1st day 30 min info session at Central Goldfields Shire, they will undertake placement at the Operations Depot 72 Burns Street, Maryborough.
