Skills You Might Learn
Students will learn industry terminology and techniques required to work in the industry. You will also learn how to interact with work colleagues and will be supervised by qualified diesel mechanics, skills attained may include the following:
• The role and daily activities of a diesel mechanic
• Understanding the inner workings of various machines such as bulldozers, cranes, graders and mining equipment
• Knowledge of different tools and equipment
• Understanding of safety regulations and standards
• Tidying, set up and pack up of work areas
• Troubleshooting
Typical Tasks & Duties
Tasks on the placement will vary depending on the current job(s), and on each student's areas of skill and interest. Tasks may include observing the team:
• Inspecting, maintaining, and repairing various diesel engines
• Assisting mechanics with tools and material selection for a variety of vehicles
• Adjusting equipment to repair or replace defective parts
• Testing malfunctioning equipment and identifying defects (diagnostics)
• Cleaning or performing maintenance work
Student Requirements
This work placement is for students interested in both the mechanical trade and mining, students must have good attention to detail, demonstrate a good work ethic, willingness to learn and want to work alongside experienced professionals. Bring your communication and problem solving skills.
Personal mobile phones are not required and should only be used out of work hours or on meal breaks.
Dress Requirements
Students will need to wear long pants, a long sleeved shirt, and protective work boots. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be supplied.
Special Transport Requirements
Students will have to make their own way to Fosterville Gold Mine, public transport is not available.
Students will need to bring lunch, drinks and snacks.
