Oakwood Riding School
Oakwood Riding School is a not for profit, community organisation offering horse riding lessons, agistment and first-class facilities for event hire. Established in 1958, Oakwood Riding School is the oldest riding school in Victoria offering lessons by NCAS EA qualified coaches on well-educated horses.
This is a great opportunity for a student who is passionate about horses to obtain hands on experience in a working specialist horse facility. In doing so you'll be contributing to a whole of team effort to expertly care for their much-valued horses.
Skills You Might Learn
Skills attained by students include basic horse care, work safely around horses, tacking up horses for riding lessons and cleaning of stalls.
Students undertaking this placement will learn skills such as effective communication, teamwork and to respond appropriately when given direction. Students will also learn to fit into a wider group of horse professionals and horse carers.
Typical Tasks & Duties
During this placement students will have the opportunity to be part of the feeding run, morning or afternoon, when school horses and horses in agistment are provided with their daily nutrition. Depending on confidence and ability, students will be able to rug and groom horses as well as retrieve horses from the yards. General stable cleaning and maintenance is also required.
Students will also have plenty of opportunity to observe horse management and behaviour to compliment classroom learning.
Student Requirements
To be a good fit for this position, students are required to have had some experience with horses and to be confident engaging with horses in their environment.
Dress Requirements
Long pants, jodhpurs or jeans.
Tops appropriate for the weather conditions. No singlets or tank tops.
Work boots or riding boots.
Sun protection as needed.
Special Transport Requirements
Oakwood Riding School is best accessed by car.
