- Working with tools and equipment necessary to the occupation and business.
Students would be learning a variety of skills relating to vehicle body repairs. This may include aspects of panel repairs and spray painting along with the use and maintenance of tools and equipment within the workshop. At the completion of the placement the student will be able to read and understand measurements and specifications, have a good understanding of metals or willing to learn more about vehicle body parts and mechanics.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Students may assist or observe trained staff with the following activities:
- Students will begin their placement by assisting with general labour duties in the workshop. This includes all related cleaning and preparation of the workshop.
- Students may be asked to assist with prepping vehicles for repair or remove damaged panels from the vehicle, which may involve using tools and machines to unbolt or cut metal and plastics.
- Students who demonstrate confidence and are at a capable stage of their practical assessment, may be asked to perform duties such as rubbing paint back and removing existing paint and corrosion from motor vehicles.
- Students may be required to assist trained staff with cleaning vehicle panels in preparation for spray painting.

Student Requirements

Students are encouraged to consider a SBAT placement to develop skills learned from their VET course in Automotive and/or Business Services.
The following requirements must be met;
- Students may undertake tasks and typical duties only if they are completing a relevant VET qualification and the structured workplace learning will allow them to obtain or further develop the skills and knowledge outlined in a relevant unit of competency within the qualification.
- Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements and have completed the OHS module as part of the VET course.
- Students must be motivated and able to follow instructions carefully and communicate well within a professional team.
- Students must be willing to work in a busy, and at times, noisy environment.
- Students must be willing to learn, pay attention to detail and want to contribute to a team environment.
- Students must possess a good work ethic and display initiative and ask their workplace supervisor questions related to learning more about the trade.
- Students are to complete any applicable relevant course work and/or take their Workplace Learning Record to the workplace everyday.
- No personal mobile phones or devices are required during work hours. Access to personal mobile phones and devices are permitted during meal breaks and should be kept away from work areas.

Dress Requirements

Protective clothing, overalls, safety footwear are required. Please discuss dress requirements at the placement interview. Personal Protective Equipment must be used where required and will be discussed prior to commencement of placement.

Special Transport Requirements

The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) is responsible for the student’s transport to and from the workplace. If it is proposed that the student may need to undertake vehicle travel with their employer and/or supervisor during the arrangement (including transporting the student to and/or from the workplace), the employer must complete the Structured Workplace Learning Travel and Accommodation Form. The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) must give their consent by also completing this form. Attendance: In order for the Training Contract to be registered with the VRQA as an SBAT, a school representative is required to sign the student’s Training Plan to acknowledge that the student is enrolled in a senior secondary program (either VCE or VCAL) and that it forms an integral part of the student’s learning program and study timetable. Training Plans are then lodged with the AAC to finalise the SBAT arrangement.
