If you are interested in History and Photography, this fantastic opportunity is for you. Working in the surrounds of Historic Ellis Cottage, you will work with passionate, friendly and skilled staff as you help to reconstruct and conserve local history. Ellis Cottage is a typical farmer’s residence built in 1865, housing a range of historical artefacts. Students will be trained and learn how to help catalogue, digitise and upload records for the Victorian Collections. This digital archive skillset is used by galleries, museums, libraries, archives, historical societies and cultural collections across the state of Victoria, Australia. You will also have the opportunity to practice you're photography and research skills as you capture and register these artefacts in the Nillumbik Historical Society’s database. Skills You Might Learn

Placement students will have the opportunity to develop transferrable skills such as teamwork, communication, time management, problem solving and analytical skills will also be evident in this placement. Other skills available for training are;

Typical Tasks & Duties

On a typical day, placement students will;
* Assist with the archivist to audit the artefacts that may have already been catalogued, and process new artefacts as required. This will include photographing each item, allocating a reference number, marking the item accordingly, and entering the photo and particulars into the database
* Assist with research to identify and describe objects as they are processed
* Assist with transcribing. In particular when preparing letters of significance (eg. World War I & II) for display or cataloging

Student Requirements

This placement could suit up to two students (to be hosted on the same day, excluding Mondays). Best suited to students undertaking Business Admin or Information Technology VET. This placement may particularly appeal to students with an interest in local history and/or photography.

Dress Requirements

As some artefacts can be quite dusty and the site remains cool throughout the day, placement students are encouraged to wear warm, casual clothes and closed toed shoes.

Special Transport Requirements

Venue is close to bus access which connects to trains on the Hurstbridge line. Travel Form may be required to enable student to move between sites.
