Students may also attain vital industry specific skills which will relate to their studies such as:

- Liaising and working with colleagues, work supervisors and networking with client and construction personnel.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Students are permitted to learn how to use plant or equipment only if they are explicitly required in the performance criteria or assessment requirements of a unit of competency the student is undertaking as part of a VET qualification.
Students may assist or observe trained staff with the following activities:
- Assisting trained staff with work tasks as instructed.
- Engaging in manual labour, learning about the operations of bricklaying and construction and areas of customer service and job satisfaction.
- Completing all tasks as assigned by trained staff.
- Typical tasks will include; mixing mortar, loading up bricks, joining walls, assisting with laying bricks, site clearing and cleaning up.

Student Requirements

Students are encouraged to consider a SWL placement to develop skills learned from their VET course in Building and Construction. The following requirements must be met;
- Students may undertake tasks and typical duties only if they are completing a relevant VET qualification and the structured workplace learning will allow them to obtain or further develop the skills and knowledge outlined in a relevant unit of competency within the qualification.
- Students must have completed the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) module in Work Related Skills or else have begun the OH&S module in the relevant VET course, along with a completed White Card (Construction Induction Card).
- Students must have a willingness to learn and be able to follow instructions carefully and competently.
- Punctuality is important and any planned or unplanned absences must be reported to both the workplace supervisor and the careers teacher.
- Students should only undertake this SWL placement if they are motivated and willing to actively participate in tasks and duties that will enhance their employability skills.
- Students are to complete any applicable relevant course work and/or Workplace Learning Record entries as outlined in the SWL Arrangement.
- Students must enjoy outdoor practical work and be comfortable working around machinery and on building sites.
- Students must display a reliable nature and be willing to develop the capabilities of a bricklayer.
- Students must be accountable for their own actions.
- Students must be respectful of their peers and workmates.
- Students must ensure their safety during work practices and look out for other team member's safety. Use of personal mobile phones are only permitted during meal breaks and in instances under instruction by work supervisors.

Dress Requirements

Please discuss with the employer at the preplacement interview. Protective, industrial Clothing including safety boots will be required.

Special Transport Requirements

The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) is responsible for the student’s transport to and from the workplace. If it is proposed that the student may need to undertake vehicle travel with their employer and/or supervisor during the arrangement (including transporting the student to and/or from the workplace), the employer must complete the Structured Workplace Learning Travel and Accommodation Form. The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) must give their consent by also completing this form. Attendance: In order for the Training Contract to be registered with the VRQA as an SBAT, a school representative is required to sign the student’s Training Plan to acknowledge that the student is enrolled in a senior secondary program (either VCE or VCAL) and that it forms an integral part of the student’s learning program and study timetable. Training Plans are then lodged with the AAC to finalise the SBAT arrangement.
