Typical Tasks & Duties
Students may undertake tasks and typical duties only if they are completing a relevant VET qualification and the structured workplace learning will allow them to obtain or further develop the skills and knowledge outlined in a relevant unit of competency within the qualification.
The student will be assisting the trained Diesel mechanics in the servicing of a wide range of vehicles with hands on participation in mechanical repairs and services.
The student will participate in various facets of a busy automotive workshop, including cleaning of the workshop, dissembling of machine parts (under supervision) and assisting the team with a wide variety of duties.
The student will also have the opportunity to learn workplace communication, safe work practices and how to cooperate effectively in a work place.
Student Requirements
Students are permitted to learn how to use plant or equipment only if they are explicitly required in the performance criteria or assessment requirements of a unit of competency the student is undertaking as part of a VET qualification.
The following requirements must be met;
Students are encouraged to consider a SWL placement to develop skills learned from their VET course in Automotive. The following requirements must be met;
- Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) requirements and have completed OH&S modules as part of their VET course. This includes obtaining a Construction Induction training (White Card).
- Be punctual and notify the workplace supervisor and careers teacher of any planned or unplanned absence from placement. Please discuss extension of placement dates if there are nominal hours to be completed as part of the VET course.
- Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course or school subject.
- Take their Workplace Learning Record and/or take course assessment tasks to the work placement every day.
- Personal mobile phones are not required during work hours. Mobile phones or devices are only to be used during meal breaks and out of work hours.
- Students are required to have a keen interest in occupations related to Diesel Mechanical Services.
- Students must be able to spend extended periods observing and gaining knowledge of processes and procedures before taking part in tasks and duties.
- Students must have a willingness to learn and be able to follow instructions carefully and competently.
- Students must be willing to communicate clearly and work with a team.
Dress Requirements
Neat tidy dress (no fabric tears or loose clothing or hoodies) or overalls are required. The mechanical work shop is a dirty environment and clothes will be affected. Safety boots must be worn. All personal protective equipment must be worn in accordance with work safety procedures.
Special Transport Requirements
The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) is responsible for the student’s transport to and from the workplace.
If it is proposed that the student may need to undertake vehicle travel with their employer and/or supervisor during the arrangement (including transporting the student to and/or from the workplace), the employer must complete the Structured Workplace Learning Travel and Accommodation Form. The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) must give their consent by also completing this form.
