This STRUCTURED WORKPLACE LEARNING (SWL) PLACEMENT is available for a one-week block for the dates from 20th to 24th October

An exciting and innovative hydraulic and pneumatic engineering, manufacturing and servicing company. Students will have an opportunity to gain insight into the manufacturing industry working on large range of machines and equipment. Students spend time in the hydraulic, machining, fabrication/spray painting and drafting departments, giving them a broad understanding of industry requirements.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Students interested in fabrication will begin their experience in the drafting department, where utilising Autodesk Inventor they will design and plan out the manufacture of their own workpiece.

Once designed, they will progress to the machining department where they will begin manufacturing their workpiece. Working with machinists on equipment such as manual and CNC milling and lathe machines, they will apply techniques such as keyway cutting, milling and slotting, surface grinding and cylinder honing.

To complete their workpiece, students progress to the fabrication department, collaborating with fabricators to learn welding fundamentals, which include mig and tig welding used for both light and heavy fabrication, and the use of materials such as mild steel through to armour steel as well as stainless steel and aluminium materials.

They will also visit the spray booth where industrial spray painting and sandblasting tasks are performed.

Students will also be allocated time in the hydraulic service department to assist technicians on tasks such as hydraulic servicing and repairs including stripping, disassembling and rebuilding of hydraulic cylinders, pumps, valves and motors.

Student Requirements

All students must complete safe at work module prior to taking this placement.
Personal mobile phones are not required and should only be used out of work hours or on meal breaks.

Dress Requirements

Student to wear industry appropriate work wear and safety boots.

Public transport is available.
