A great opportunity is available at the Sunraysia Community Health Services (SCHS) as a Community Health Assistant to complete a Work Experience Placement (WE Opportunity) in Community Health Service areas with qualified experienced Community Health and Allied Health Industry staff.
The WE Opportunity is ideally suited to a Year 10 student or a VCE student.
Students will experience during the work placement a broad range of Community Health Service occupations including the following careers/qualifications.
- Paramedics
- Allied Health Assistant
- Nursing
- Physiotherapy
- Exercise Physiotherapy
- Nutritionist
- Community Services
- Health Promotion – Bachelor of Health Science
- Aged care and disability support workers

Skills You Might Learn
Prior to the interview with the host employer, students are required to review the businesses web page and learn some background information on the organisation and what it is they do.
Students with a positive attitude towards Community Health who are self-motivated, willing to listen and follow instruction are encouraged to consider a future WE Opportunity to develop skills learned from their school subjects relating to Community Services and Allied Health Assistance.
Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
• Students must be interested in the Community Health Services and possess good communication skills.
• Students must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
• Dress appropriately.
• Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
• Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
• Be punctual.
• Follow management instructions.
• Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
• Work within the team.
• Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
• Respect other people’s belongings.
• Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
• Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
• Take their Logbook to the work placement every day.
Students will be requested to confirm pre placement requirements and onboarding information which will include vaccination history as instructed by the Host Employer. Vaccination requirements are mandatory with SCHS. Students may be required to undertake an internal SCHS training course.
Typical Tasks & Duties
As an Community Health Assistant, the student will observe and spend time under the direct supervision of experienced and qualified Health and Allied Health staff assisting in a broad range of industry programs delivered by SCHS departments.
The student may observe and assist with the following tasks and duties;
• Participate in workplace health and safety.
• Communicate and work in health or community services
• Apply basic principles and practices of infection control.
• Respond effectively to behaviours of concern.
• Assist with movement.
• Recognise healthy body systems.
• Interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately.
• Engage with health professionals and the health care system.
• Transport individuals.
• Work with diverse people
• Work within a community development framework.
• Other tasks and duties relevant to the work placement as instructed.
Student Requirements

Students may also attain vital industry specific skills which will relate to their studies such as:

- Working with tools and equipment necessary to the occupation and business
- Liaising and working with colleagues, bosses, customers/clients and suppliers.
Dress Requirements
The student must be well presented, clean and hygienic at all times.
• Neat professional casual attire is required.
• Flat, non-slip, enclosed work shoes.
• Denim, leggings, torn clothing and inappropriate slogans are not acceptable.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the tasks and duties carried out by the student, will be supplied by the Host Employer.
Special Transport Requirements
Public Transport is limited, students to check bus transport availability and or speak to parents/carer to organise transport prior to contacting employer.
